They would be better off (literally!) if they tackled the super-rich and their tax avoidance.

To be fair, tax avoidance is perfectly legal and they pay large amounts of tax. Closing the variuous loopholes would work in some respects I suppose.

HB&B - Where is your source? I am guessing the BBC website somewhere?

Aye, "legal" but immoral.

Scrounging incapcity benefit when you are fit is 'obtaining money by deception' - exactly what the super-rich are doing by fiddling their tax bills.

brighton, actually
but what if..

what if you could not work at all (medical reasons) ? are the benefits cut of completely?

a neighbour of mine cannot drive or do any manual work, because of his poor health, and eyesght. has to be checked by doctor every 6 months to keep him claim going as it is.

Immoral in your opinion. And if they are abiding by the law then how is it a fiddle?
I would guess that most people who use tax avoidance schemes still contribute more to the exchequer per year then someone on an average income.

But probably less as a proportion of their income.
Phillip Green the shopping mogul pays no tax despite a huge multi-million pound salary each year.
It's wrong.

True. But it benefits the country more.

Also true. But he has created tens of thousands of jobs, hundreds of millions in tax revenue from his companies, and has probably raised living standards for the population as a whole. Not to mention of course the VAT he pumps into the coffers every time he splashes some of that fortune. I would say we would be better off with a few more Phillip Greens.

I agree. He and others like him should still pay tax like everyone else though.

If they are able bodied they will just go on JSA, its only a question of changing the type of benefit claimed. Incapacity benefit isn't as easy as some people think to obtain and the vast majority of claimants are completely genuine anyway.

Yeah actually I agree also, he's got enough money so that a tax bill, however large would not affect him in any way. I just wanted to make the point that his ruthless nature has benefited this country much more than it has cost us. And I think he is not an isolated case by any means.

This is just like the assault on disability living allowance. It targets the most vulnerable people who are least able to defend themselves but are often in the greatest need of a little extra money. It is a disgrace and embarassment that this government targets such groups to get an easy headline while at the same time presiding over some of the biggest wastes of money in our countries history, e.g. computerized health records ~£24 Billion, CSA £800 Million, Iraq war ???, etc. etc.

The 'Source' is the Welfare Reform Bill which was published yesterday. Although the sub Janet and John synopsis this thread is based around, doesnt do it its full justice.

No, I think I did it more justice than it deserved.
