What is fabinho even trying to do with that tackle?! He has a nibble at Evan's left leg, then with Evan's body totally shielding the ball and going away from him just goes lunging into the back of his right achilles. The ball was never there to be won.
Quite.

Just watched the game again on ITV and no idea why that's not a straight red I have no idea.

I couldn't really see it at the time from my seat but looking back, it's horrendous. Fabinio has just come on, half a yard too slow and crippled Fergie from the back.

‘Tackle’ here seen from the rear - it’s not even a tackle, which implies an attempt to play the ball - it’s just Fabinho literally booting Ferguson on his achilles heel to trip him up.

Fcuking disgraceful officiating - VAR spend an eon trying to decide if Mitoma’s perfectly good (brilliant) goal can be ruled out for offside but a dangerous deliberate red card foul gets brushed off with a yellow while our starlet striker hobbles home on crutches - I’m so 😡😡

The problem is the general outcry against VAR has made the officials non interventionist. The offside lines are relatively simple decision-making, admittedly still takes a bit of time to draw them, but anything that involves assessments overturning the on field official, they now shy away from. People who don’t want VAR say mistakes are part of the game and have to be put up with, well you are getting your way to some degree

Another thing that could derail our season. I wouldn't be surprised if Evan was out for months.

It was an absolutely disgraceful challenge. How in God's name is that not a red? Coote and Swarbrick (the VAR) should be suspended.

Can the club take any action such as a formal complaint against the officials? Someone needs to make a stand against these awful VAR decisions.

The problem is terrible weak refs such as Coote rely on VAR to make decisions for them because they are too scared to send off players from the big clubs.

Yes VAR doesn’t remove human error and never could do that because it’s still operated by humans. We don’t have offside goals now though. When there is a general mood to empower VAR officials over the on pitch ref, then I think other decisions will improve, until then we are stuck with whatever we have on the pitch, whether they are weak like today’s or not

A lot of Ireland fans waiting on the news as much as us - I’m dreading it to be honest

Odd reasoning.

deliberately causing potentially career changing injuries to players has never been an acceptable part of the game so don’t imply it’s something ‘we have brought on ourselves’ or ‘have put up with’ as a price for not having VAR (or having VAR if that was your point) - Unless VAR has rendered all on field refs completely blind, any complete knob could see that was an obvious red card. If Ferguson is seriously injured and out for weeks, I’d be wanting some form of a disciplinary inquiry/appeal/sanctions.

Seems it’s a case of Liverpool having VAR in their duggout

In the situation of challenging a Yellow Card, options are limited - The referee may be assisted by a video assistant referee (VAR) only in the event of a 'clear and obvious error' or 'serious missed incident' in relation to:

  • goal/no goal
  • penalty/no penalty
  • direct red card (not second caution)
  • mistaken identity when the referee cautions or sends off the wrong player of the offending team
Therefore, the Yellow Card decision rather than a red in relation to Ferguson’s injury didn‘t involve VAR. (Which you probably knew!). VAR can review it’s own decisions post-match and overturn them, but again, only those where the ref was assisted.

Whether the referee can be sanctioned for poor decision making someone else might advise on that but the FA seems pretty clear on the referee’s decision being final and respected..🤷‍♂️

Legal action of course is always an option against a club or individual player, especially for loss of earnings if applicable, for an negligent injury sustained from ‘serious foul play‘ but ‘negligence’ has a high bar

Although, I hope to God, Ferguson hasn’t sustained serious enough injury to warrant suing LFC.

It's a bit sad that not much if anything can be done against blatantly suspicious officiating. It really does smell as if there's something going on there, that should it ever reach the light of day, could turn the sport upside down. Football needs to seriously consider the Australian A-League system where VAR explains its decision-making, over public address on a decision by decision basis.
