Cole Palmer was excellent.

But typically England, the pundits and us thrash around from pillar to post.

Two games ago it Bellingham is the greatest player on the planet and we may well bring it home, the other day it was only we started with the astonishingly great CM’er Gallagher, tonight Cole Palmer will bring it home.

The same cycle every 2 years, mid tournament.

Worryingly, I get the impression that mid tournament Southgate is also reactive, in a disjointed way.

To be fair its always difficult to breakdown an organised team that sticks to its task of getting behind the ball. The task is made more difficult though when you play so slowly and your passing is poor and your manager doesn't see it or that some players are just not working. Bellingham should have been off much earlier , same as Saka. Gallagher shouldn't have started. Thought Palmer showed a freshness and drive that was better than most. I would be quite happy for Kane to drop deeper , he can certainly pick a pass, as long as another forward (Watkins) is put in as his replacement. Mainoo must start....
Gallagher is a bit hit and miss, but the one thing he always brings is energy

Where was that tonight?

He's been southgated

Southgate:

"I thought we were much improved with the ball. We have created some good openings and at the moment it is hard work for us."

"We are not quite getting that break in front of goal. I think the players who came on did well. I understand the reactions but it is a tough environment."

"We tried to win the game by the changes we made. We put attacking players on the pitch."

On Cole Palmer's impact:

"He did very good. He finds space well and he makes chances and we were backing him to score at the end."

"They are young players and we are blooding them in a difficult environment. They had a good impact for us and did good things for us. Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, it was a really good move. We have to build on that. There were a lot of things to build on from tonight."

He was better than Bellingham. Which isn’t saying much.

It makes me want to cry what Southgate is doing to these two unreal talents. They deserve to be able to change nationality.

Foden in these games seems so tense, chasing the ball, snapping at shots, greedy. A mental thing. Wondering if Guardiola says relax, let the ball do the work.

Mind you in 2016 we struggled in our group - finished 2nd behind Wales! - and then ofc Iceland knocked us out in R16.
Danny Welbeck scored when we won the group in 2012 ! Another 7 points then out in the quarter finals after penalties to Italy.
We weren't even there in 2008 ! Southgate frankly avoids such humiliation.
And in 2004 we played the best football for years - still didn't make it beyond the quarter finals thanks to Ronaldo and Rooney getting sent off.
Who knows. ? Its tournament football !!!

Agree

The answer to all our woes was Gallagher, yet he gets subbed at 45

At least give him 60 minutes or so
If you think he is, he gave TAA 2 starts.

There is the possibility that Southgate is playing a tactical blinder here.

We have looked relatively poor, but still topped the group and spent minimal energy with little stress, injury or suspension, we almost havent had to get out of 2nd gear, that could be deliberate?

Potter seems like a good for this England team.

We'd see all the different formations and players that people want....

.... And still not score 😂

Bellingham also looking way off it last two games - getting more and more aggravated.

Look at the screenshot I posted above where their average positions in the first half are in the same spot. Southgate’s tactics are killing them both.

The difference between then and now is that German, Spain and France were top teams who delivered. Those England teams played against much better teams than we have today. We are on paper the top team and couldn’t deliver a newspaper if our lives depended on it.

It turned out that both were poor as deep lying CM’ers. No one can defend that Gallagher performance, he was a liability gifting them openings, whilst obviously uncreative.

I’m sure a load of people here last week called for the perfect CM combo of Gallagher and Rice, you too?

Ange called it half time ….. Bellingham/Gallagher/Rice deprive us of creativity and passing.

I'd play Wharton

Point was of Dullard saw him as the answer, don't just give him 45
