Hmmm i'm a bit confused over this... whether anyone thinks it was a foul or not, the ref thought it was a foul, so got his card out and sent him off.

A foul is still a foul, and is punishable even if the ball is out of play.

So it's irrelevant that the ball had actually gone out of play.The two players involved felt it WAS still in play, and even if the lino indicates it had gone over the line, the ref still felt the 2nd yellow was deserved, so i think the Russian lad was extremely lucky, and i'm not sure on what grounds the ref reversed the card decision... to my mind it should have been a 2nd yellow and a goal kick.

I was just pointing out how many people in the media (not just us on here) underestimated Russia and Croatia. I was trying to give them credit for getting this far in a tournement where they were not fancied to do that well.

Good point. As per usual, there was an unrealistic level of expectation and the misled idea that Russia and Croatia were inferior to us. The press played their part in that, the fans and also the FIFA rankings which happen to be hugely misleading.
