Although it could be argued that it's because we've being fighting wars elsewhere. I'd also suggest that NATO has had something to do with that lasting peace. Although it could be argued that it's because we've being fighting wars elsewhere

If it's the UK, even as part of NATO it's not spending in a year what it spent in a week to fight a proper war, like WWI or WWII.

So the Chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee is.............(drum roll) also the General Secretary of the Council of Europe. No conflict of interest there obviously...............no doubt Borroso et al had absolutely no idea what was coming.

There really is no end to their arrogance.

Well, the Council of Europe and the European Union are different entities, and Norway isn't part of the EU.

Well, the Council of Europe and the European Union are different entities, and Norway isn't part of the EU.

Different legal entities they may be, however to indicte that those at the top of both organisations do not share similar values is laughable. Jagland has been a long time supporter of the EU and has advocated Norway joining against the wishes of the electorate. There have been 2 referendums there now both of which have supported their position to remain out.

Just more of the same arrogance.

As meaningless posts go, that's quite impressive.

I think the Daily Mash is on the money:

Best Nobel Peace Prize ever

THE Nobel Peace Prize has caused stroke-inducing rage from people who are an absolute joy to watch when they are angry.

The award to the European Union has caused thousands of people across Britain to mangle their index fingers as they battered their profane, impotent fury into a Daily Telegraph comment box.

Nobel committee president Thorbjoern Jagland said: “We totally forgot about the deadline and then realised we didn’t have time to read all the submissions, so we just thought ‘f**k it’.

“Causing extreme violence is not in the spirit of the peace prize, but once an absolute belter of an idea gets hold of you, there really is nothing you can do about it.”

Margaret Gerving, whose husband Geoff blames the European Charter on Human Rights for his premature ejaculation, said: ”Eventually he stopped typing and just smashed his head against the keyboard as hard as he could, over and over again until he started to bleed. “Now his speech is all slurred so I suppose I’ll have to phone NHS 24.”

Emma Bradford, whose husband Ian claims to have been the first person to compare the Common Agricultural Policy to Treblinka, said: “He’s on the roof, he’s naked apart from his Union Jack cape and he’s shaking his fist at Jesus. But at least he’s not moping.”

Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: “What has kept the peace in Europe for 60 years? The EU? Nuclear missiles? Our shared love of creamy milk chocolate? I suspect we will never debate it like people with brains.”

He added: “Strangely, many of the people who object to the EU getting the prize also objected to Medecins Sans Frontieres getting the prize. They were however fully supportive of the prize going to Doctors Without Borders.

“Personally, I would have awarded it to It’s a Knock-Out.”

I see what you have done there...............more of the same arrogance.

Good stuff.

The fact that someone on a committee is supportive of a given organisation isn't arrogance. Would you post the same nonsense if they were, say, pro-Medicin Sans Frontiere or pro-Save The Children? Those organisations may not be in the same league politically as the EU, but it does appear that you're blind to the point that the predecessor of the EU's original remit was closer financial (and later cultural) integration thereby promoting peace across a war-hit continent. 55 years on, those sentiments may well have been lost, and there's a certain level of arrogance (I'm using your sixth-form Common Room word here) that this level of peace has now been taken for granted as the EU has grown into a clunking, bureaucratic mess.

Come on, you recognise yourself that the EU is not a charity so let's keep the focus on the actual events not irrelevant permutations. Also Jagland is not "someone" either he is the Chairman of the Committee; a Chairman with solid pro EU views.

I fully accept that a key foundation of the initial predecessors to the EU was peace, however that is to ignore the geopolitical reality that existed in Europe post 1945. Further, nuclear weapons owned by France/UK and NATO has as much to do with securing peace in Europe as the EU (if not more). In that context had the award been made after the treaty of Rome then there would be more logic than now.

The press release made by the Committee highlights amongst other points, how the EU is advancing democracy in Europe. Frankly that is utter bollocks. The EU is actually working against democracy, it is a deeply unpopular institution that actively avoids democracy. I agree that this has moved from the initial objectives, however that is only reinforcing why the award now is farcical.

Which brings me back to the underlying objective of the award now........the EU is losing the economic arguments, so now it is shifting its raison d'être to an organisation that has maintained the peace in Europe.

If this point was being made by a wholly independent committee I would still be surprised, however the fact that the Chairman is deeply involved in the EU project then at best it is breathtaking..........arrogance.

Sodding Bono was nominated a few years ago .... it's a busted flush of an award.

Should be noted that Norway have turned down membership a couple of times
