Interesting interviews on LBC today with English political journalists based in Brussel, also with continental political writers.

Their take was that the EU is annoyed with AstraZeneca (an Anglo Swedish multinational), not the UK. But there’s much anger with von der Leyen who’s seen by her colleagues, MEP’s and individual governments as screwing up their entire procurement going back months. On the Eddie Mair show, one mentioned that in essence she’s now shunned, alone with her team on the 13th floor of the commission building.

On a positive note experts were of the opinion that there won’t be an EU export ban, several countries such as Ireland, Belgium and France are vehemently against that. Instead the EU is working behind the scenes with the UK and pharmas across the globe to massively increase supply into the EU.

The final hurdle will be to beat vaccine hesitancy in many EU nations.

Yes, Ireland has made it very clear they do not favour an export ban.

Hopefully the (amazing) results of the US trials will help persuade the Continentals that the AZ Vaccine is safe and effective.

They need to have a MASSIVE drive on TV/Social Media etc. in France /Germany/Italy /Spain etc persuading their people to take the AZ Jab.

It will be very hard though, as it's had such a bad press so far, not helped by Macron and others.

Maybe those countries don't have a UK style bias media influence and alternative reality?

Will can all be furious though.

There would be no AZ vaccine if AZ hadn't agreed to the fundamental condition of using the Oxford science and British research funding that the contracted doses to the UK took priority over all further contracts.

The fact the EU missed this fundamental and is now flailing about trying to cover up their abysmal procurement is enough to make anyone furious.

:nono: hope its just political posturing, or journalist sensationalism, and no minds of consequence need to be changed.

the utter stupidity of this would be the EU cant currently use the product from the Halix factory for some bureaucratic reasons. if approved, it can and would be available to EU. they can do that without escalating to export bans.

according to this article, the Halix product isnt approved for UK either, one sample batch was sent here. this is political posturing.

....sooo, if we were still in the EU we'd have those vaccines...?

no. due to some nonsense, no one is having those vaccines. EU regulator hasn't approved the factory, they've made product and current it sits stockpiled.

The UK gutter press have had a shocking month, 10 years on from Leverson and they're worse than ever.

Interesting, where is the return xenophobia across Europe in response to the mutated 3rd wave that we exported? Just imagine if the reverse occurred...

Ironic that mad cows started in UK (indeed Sussex) and even after GB beer was proved safe, the French blockaded us.

A very interesting piece on Newsnight last night about the EU's stance on Astra Zeneca . Apparently the EU have only received a fraction expected of AZ vaccines by end of this month, however this is the same with UK. Pfizer have also seriously failed to deliver what was promised to EU & UK but no mention of this by EU.

EU also have a very large order of vaccines by another 2 companies who have so far failed to produce a single vaccine but again unmentioned by EU.

It would seem all pharmaceutical companies are having tremendous difficulties scaling up in a short period of time to meet instant worldwide demand and meeting contracts.

The conclusion of the investigation was that the EU was playing politics and trying to deflect attention away from its own failings and picking on Astra Zeneca mainly due to its UK links.

Many of the vaccine doses the EU are receiving are going unused anyway - so even if they received more, what difference would it make?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/56483766
"France and Germany have used only about half of the AstraZeneca jabs they have received, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).......As of 26 March, France had distributed 1.6 million out of 2.9 million doses available, while Germany received 3.4 million but used only 1.9 million. The Netherlands had used only 36% of its supply."
