The software wouldnt run the first time I tried to open it. At that time it wouldnt have known it was supposed to be linked to something as I could have been anyone trying to run the software for the first time. Or have I got that bit wrong??

The office copy did have some details in the database but I tend to reset the database to wipe it so that there is nothing in the database. I might have forgotten to do that last time I used it in the office but again how would running the software on the laptop even know the other copy even existed at this point?

The software, irrespective of its on your laptop or in the office sounds like it has got a connection string to a database. If that database is sat on a machine in your office, its not going to just connect to it from your laptop

Are your "web builders", and the tech support people from your website the same thing?

You should turn your firewall back on now btw before you forget

The website is an off the shelf cloud application with a back office/dashboard etc and any of the clients that have had a website built are able to download this software and use it to upload products to their websites. When I first ran it on my laptop it wouldn't know who I was and so wouldn't be able to link to any databases until I had configured it with my account details. It would then link to my website and the database held in the cloud. The company are the designers and the tech support.

Righteo, then this sounds more then like the software authenticates with a username and password, to a small hosted ms sql database.

You said the guys asked you to download some ms stuff. Do you know what that was? Are you able tell us what this software is called PM if you want

I think it was a microsoft download with the latest SQL database software or something similar. It was definitely a Microsoft file

The actual software with the problem is Oxatis Dataplug. The web builder/host is a French company called Oxatis and they have taken over the previous english company Actinic

If you go to windows services, can you see one called oxatis dataplug.

So do windows key and R. Type services.msc, press enter. On the right hand side you are looking for a service of the above name..

One possibility:
The error message you posted indicates you are running a 32 bit operating system.
If the code you are trying to run is 64 bit it will fall in a heap.
If the code runs on the office device, I'll bet that's running 64bit windows.

I have 64bit ver of Win 10 on my Surface Pro and I have had to create a Win 10 32bit virtual machine on it to enable me to run a couple of old 8 bit programs that won't run native on a 64bit o/s [the opposite to your problem]
to check your Win ver click the Windows icon [usually bottom left of screen] and click "Settings" [one up from bottom] -> click "System" [s/b top left option] and on the left menu scroll down and click the last option "About" -> ~6th line down "System type:" will reveal

It’s 64 bit same as the office PC

Who was is it that told you to install ms stuff? The installation package of the program trys to download SQL 2012 express without you doing it which seems to be the local database it uses..
