one advantage st james' park (newcastle, not exeter) has over basically every decent stadium in the country is it's location

it's pretty much in the city centre, and therefore a piece of piss to get to AND it's got loads of cracking pubs a stones throw away

This improves the atmosphere, obviously because everyone has a few brandy alexanders before kick-off. Strings knows better than I but I think Molineux is similar.

Sorry, I didn't do them in order, just the twenty I'd pick.

So you'd put the Riverside, Walkers and St Marys above Hillsborough and Portman Road ?

Personally I'd struggle to think of three more boring, soulless, utterly featureless functional stadiums than those.

With our upcoming new stadium set to be one of the very best in the land, it got me thinking if the EPL was just based on football stadiums which 20 would you choose?? Doesn't have to be the biggest in terms of capacity, or swankiest, just all round the twenty best football grounds in England??

For me:

Old Trafford
Emirates
Anfield
Goodison
St James' Park
Sunderland SOL
White Heart Lane
Upton Park
St Marys
Riverside Stadium
Pride Park
Walkers Stadium
Falmer
Villa Park
Ricoh Arena
Goodison Park
Stamford Bridge
Eastlands
DW Stadium
Reebok Stadium

I presume that's NOT St James' Park, home of the mighty EXETER CITY

and NO Wembley ?????? Not the best by a long way but a damn sight better than the Ricoh Arena, Coventry and the DW Stadium, Wigan

Staying in The Brighton Hotel when I'm up there in Jan, right in the mix. I cannae wait!

The area around The Lane would defiently be in the top 20 in the Country... :jester:

Pride Park isn't all that either..

Went on a stag do in Newcastle in Feb and stayed in the Brighton Hotel. Watch out for the manager, he approached us when we got in at 4am offering us cheap ciggies. Said some guy had 400 in his room so he thought he wouldn't miss a few. Just happened to be one of my mates rooms.

I've done a tour of the Walkers and it's a cracking stadium, maybe you don't get a true feel of the place from the away section but I was very impressed.

As for the Riverside, never been there but it was one of the first new grounds of that era and always looks impressive on the box. Been to St Marys once and it was a great arena for football and there was a raucous atmosphere.

Hillsborough is big and ugly, and mostly half full. I'll give you Portman Road, it looks a decent stadium but I've never been there so can't really judge.

Oi Crodo, where the hell is The Hawthorns on your list?

Now that is a proper football stadium.

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
I would defiantly include the Galpharm stadium.

No disrespect to you and others but why do people rate the Galpharm ?
It is four stands each with an arched roof with a patch of grass in the middle.
It is not enclosed the wind whistles through, and in fact the catering concourse behind the away end doesn't even have a roof !

i'm not sure where the brighton hotel is......is it on brighton grove?

if so, then it's definitely not 'in the mix', i used to live up the road from it!

It is, yeah. 17 minute walk to the town centre according to Google. That, to me, is 'in the mix'. Course people have different ideas of what in the mix means/is.

Up in 2 weeks too for a random weekend away - grey street hotel I think - much closer than The Brighton.

Actually I think I'll PM you about it.

... is an absolute shithole. One massive modern stand does not make up for the rest of the stadium being an ugly crumbling wreck.

I prefer saying it's got 'character' :lolol:

This sort of debate is all personal preference. Either shiny, comfortable modern stadia or older, different, 'character' stadiums.

yeah, i know where it is now ........it wont take long to get into the centre, but it's in a residential area which is why i cant really picture it being in a mix! however, around there there are a couple of cracking little indian restaurants! (no pubs though )

it'll take about 5 mins on a bus from there to get into 'toon'

Hillsborough is a tremendous stadium, but then I've only ever been there when the crowd was 35,000.

Couldn't you find an identikit picture of Pride Park to complete the set? And I'm not sure Middlesbrough quite belongs in that list - I'm fairly sure it holds 3,000 more than the other 3 stadiums which all hold 32,000.

Its not about capacity though, its about design. Can't see a jot of difference between the Riverside, St Marys or the Walkers, apart from seat colours.

Derby is a *bit* better than those I think, cos of that funny bit in the corner. Not much though.
