Sweden
You continue to struggle. It's not the subject matter. It's you. You act like a complete know-it-all on too many threads like you're an authority on everything when clearly you're not. You talking like there isn't a discussion to be had over qualifying when games are being decided 20 nil is horseshit. I've no idea what the answer is, I'm interested in various opinions and your insistence on shutting down debate is getting on my tits.

Oh and I don't care what Swedish international forums think, but if I did I'd register on one. That would be a very strange thing to do though, and is the equivalent of your frankly odd perma-presence on here. No wonder you haven't got a girlfriend.

There is no debate. A few people saying "ffs pointless" and a few people saying "this is why there should be pre-qualifiers". What I do is to have another opinion and I really dont consider that "shutting down the debate". This is much like in cases where there is opposing opinions and people from both sides during the argument say "why am I not allowed to this opinion?". The answer is always "you are and I am allowed to disagree with it."

Its also funny how you criticise the way I debate while doing the infantile "my daddy is stronger than yours" type of personal attacks like "you have no life IRL" or "you have no girlfriend".

On international football matters, no.

"La Liga is shit and Leo Messi is shit because they're never performing against Stoke!!! Zlatan? You ever see him perform against English teams?"

"Football is coming home!" (in a body bag, yea..)

"Iceland? Lol, we're mighty serial winners England, I'll go

"Omg? Only final? DESPITE OUR SUPER DUPER MEGA TEAM? If we had Mickey Mouse as manager instead of Southgate we'd be stomping all these with our mighty Kalvin-Phillips-in-midfield-superteam."

Its quite hilarious and really the same attitude that makes you despise smaller nations participating in the same competitions as Glorious England. What you fail to realise is that a team like San Marino participating in the World Cup qualifiers is probably not all that different from how some percieve England participating in a World Cup game against a big nation or in a shootout. I could imagine people in Italy, if they were more arrogant, thinking "So England are going to the World Cup again... why? What is the purpose?".

Sorry but what are you prattling on about?

What are you on about? Sometimes you're extremely strange. Jekyll and Hyde type character, or more likely, some kind of substance abuse.

Either way, you're acting like a prat. Again. Maybe go out for a walk?

Sensitive subject huh...

Some lazy pie throwing between nations is part of what makes football fun IMO. But maybe you're as able to take it as you are winning tournaments... :)

I will put aside your clear and obvious anti-English agenda and try to explain to you how a pre-qualifying tournament would work.

1) You take the top-ranked eight teams and seed them into four groups

2) Those top eight seeds could play friendlies or a Nations Cup competition. You won't get 20-0 scorlines as the seeded teams would be closer to parity and therefore friendlies / mini Nations Cup give the countries opportunities to try out new players / systems etc.

3) The remaining affiliated nations then get split into groups to play the mini qualifer tournament. I haven't bothered counting but you would either have four groups with top two qualifying or eight groups with only the winner qualifying. Again, there would be far more parity between the countries competing so total thrashings are most unlikely to occur.

4) Those successful in the mini qualifier then join the seeded nations and then you start the qualifying groups.

It really isn't that difficult to understand I hope.

Oh dear.

Let's try approaching it differently then.

In what way do you believe England benefitted from stuffing Latvia 20-0? What lessons did they learn that will be helpful when they come up against quality sides in the next World Cup? You may also care to enlighten us on what benefits Latvia gained from that absolute tonking?

If we want womens football to improve globally and the lower ranked womens teams to develop, I don't see how 20-0 thrashings is going to achieve that. I could be wrong (and so could Emma Hayes) so look forward to your dispassionate explanation of how last nights game benefitted either side.

When a foreigner (from Crotia, Italy, Germany or wherever) mocks the English for this song/chant, they instantly highlight that they don't really understand the English language - or at least, the English psyche - as much as they think they do.

It's like mocking Brighton fans for singing "By far the greatest team, the world has ever seen".

Yes, we know. Now jog on!

Probably a good time to say that debating the merits of international football and qualifers etc is all fair game but please play the ball and not the man (or woman). In short, if you type personal abuse, have a quick read back before you post - and then delete it. Thanks.

I'm not sure if it's true but to me the song was always about the tournament coming home, not winning the thing. Hence, it's revival at the last Euros. Never understood the venom about the song from other nations and Swansman and the accusations of arrogance. And it's just a lovely song to sing, wrapped up in nostalgia of my youth circa Euro 96.
Swansman is just being passive aggressive and trying to wind us up (again) and it's a shame he has to act like such a tool sometimes.

The weird thing is, having watched the goals, there was only about 3 absolute shambolic moments from the Latvian defence/keeper. Most of the goals were really well taken.Ruthless.

The 1996 version - no. As Wozza said anybody who thinks the 1996 version is in any way a triumphant song about how we're gonna win and how the rest don't stand a chance hasn't understood the meaning. It's about 'football' coming home.

The 1998 version though - wow. A bigger load of triumphalist bollocks I've never heard; it makes 'Rule Britannia' sound like 'The Red Flag'. Fortunately though it's never the version people think of when they think of "Football's coming home".

Regardless of releases, when sung in bars and terrraces (seats), it's a song of hope rather than expectation.

It's fun and positive.

I'm pretty sure it will still be sung in 20 years' time, whether we've won anything or (probably) not, and no matter what non-English think of it.

It is true. Baddiel and Skinner have said in interviews the "footballs coming home" lyric is about the 1996 Euro tournament being held in England which has always been considered the spiritual home of association football. The rest of the song is about the hope and passion you always have going into a game (and a season or tournament) that your side is going to win despite all those times of not winning and those moments you've come close in the past. It's never been about England being the best and we are going to win. It's a song that sums up football perfectly for me, especially as a Brighton fan, we keep coming back again and again because of all those "oh so nears".
