In defence of England, the conditions were pretty dire. Pitch looked uneven, and wind was very strong. Not the right conditions to play exciting, flowing football.

Sounds like Withdean. :lolol:

We need Heskey back in the squad, tonight would have been perfect for him, the lack of physical presence up front tonight is the sole reason we only won by a single goal.

 Please god no. If you want a big bloke to run around a bit, fall over, not win headers & never look like scoring then he's your man. But that's not what we want

Anyone else notice some of the advertising hoardings in Baku? Talk about doing the time warp!

Best of Kenny Everett?

Wimpy?

It must be 1984 over there. And do those moving advertisting hoardings do other peoples eyes in? I can't concentrate on the game (no real loss last night) because my eyes are drawn a bright red advert for Bargain Booze. Gives me motion sickness.

The win was all that mattered last night. It was never going to be an easy 3,4,5 nil.
Cole's cross for the goal was an absolute peach.
Jenas did nothing to warrant being picked again.
Azerbiwatsit's corner routine was quality.

The highlight for me was Robinson tripping up the guy who had ran the whole length of the pitch:lolol:

Defoe was very poor last night. Smith should have played right from the start to give a bit more strengh up front.

Terrible windy and wet conditions, and the match didn't finish until after 11pm their time. It was never going to be a classic.

Any sort of win is a good achievement. England were pretty much in control from the start, so I'm happy.

I find some people overly-critical of Defoe. He's only young and finding his feet, he got an important goal against Poland and is one of the few decent English strikers around. People expect too much too soon.

A lot of people were also critical of Jenas before he played, but he had a decent game.

What is still bugging me is the way Rooney seemed toi want to run the whole game by dropping deep and coming to collect the ball from in front of the defence, what the f*** are Butt and Lampard there for. Rooney should be rightup the pitch nearer the gola where he can be realy dangerous, by dropping deep he's negating his own talent.

I think the criticism of Defoe is a little harsh, he's only just broken into the international team and he's young. He had a poor game last night, but the conditions really didn't suit him, he's the kind of player who needs quality service into his feet, which he just didn't get.

Next time he scores for England we'll all be saying what a great prospect he is, remember that before the Wales match half the people on here said he should start up front instead of Michael Owen!!!

Defoe had a shocker, end of. He is not good enough, the ease with which he kept getting shrugged off the ball was quite scary at times.

Biggest cheer in the King and Queen was for Polands third goal

The England game was f***ing abysmal. There is no excuse for not beating these sort of teams by at least 4 or 5. All this "no such thing as an easy game in international football" is crap. I doubt a sinlge Azerbaijani player would even get into the Albion team at the moment. The England players didn't even get out of second gear last night - they plainly couldn't be arsed.
