Southgate on Mings:

"Wow. Someones paid £27m for him, so he MUST be good"

Unfortunately for him, Dunk won't get any more England caps while he stays at Brighton. Thats just the way it works. If he'd signed for Leicester for £40-odd million, then he would be in this squad.

The United boy from Palace now gets a call up after improving no end in 3 games as Utd go crazy with their 4 points so far.

I rate Mings, he’s a good guy too and hard to work as hard as anyone for recognition. But, given our start, and a reminder to all that he’s way more than an ‘old school defender’ pretty surprised Lewis didn’t get the nod ahead of him.

From what I’ve seen of him he is VERY raw.
Mount and Maddison definitely deserve a chance.

Dunk is nowhere near the squad.

Stones (injured)
Tarkowski
Dunk
Coady/lascelles just behind

He’d be better off trying out as a holding midfielder.

Heatons call up is laughable. An absolute howler v Bournemouth. Henderson and Ramsdale are better options. Heaton is 33.5 years old?!

Oh and Adam johnson has more premier league asssits since 2013 than lingard. 6 versus 5.

Whilst agreeing that Lewis Dunk is still some way off a place in the England squad, I do feel that Tom Heaton is still one of our best keepers, and that at 33 (and a half, as you put it), is still pretty much in his prime as a goalkeeper. Surely too, even the best goalkeeper in the world is permitted the odd howler? In fact I'd rather see him between the posts, than Jordan Pickford at the moment.

Wow, I didn’t know this.
Given how attacking they became under OGS that’s really damning. Unless he was injured? :)

He missed 5 games at the start of the 2018-19 season through injury. The rest of the time he's been available.

Take out his productive December, and you'd have to go back to April 2018 for an assist v Bournemouth, then February 2018 for a goal v Chelsea. He has been consistent at least - consistently shithouse.

I disagree. I'd love to have Dunk in the England squad but Southgate's had him in two squads and given him a game. He's had a look at him up close and is now looking at other players. Maguire and Gomez and until now, Stones, were his nailed on three central defenders. It seems to me that Southgate is cycling through all the other potential fourth choice cb's. I think Mings can consider himself lucky that he's made the England squad so quickly though. If I was Coady, Mee or Lascelles I'd be gutted. They don't seem to be anywhere near getting a look in.

If Dunk continues playing well under Potter, showing off his ball playing skills he could still win his way back into the squad. I don't think it'll matter whether that's with us or at Leicester.

Dunky has done enough for us that we should all be wishing him a successful international career

Not petty at all, straight logic all the time he is away from the England camp he is less to be influenced by some of the big time charlies that will be there and more to the point one less opportunity to get injured. IF he were desperate to play for England he would have pushed to leave during the summer , as far as I am aware he didn't. He can tell his kids he played for England cause he did.

Can't see it that way. BHA are one of the PL minnows, hence its that much more difficult for one of our players to get noticed. When was the last time Southgate even bothered coming to the Amex ?

He'd notice Dunk if he was splashed all over the papers following a multi-million pound move (see Mings / Wan-Bissaka), but without that coverage, he'll forget he even exists.

Without a doubt if Dunk played for any of the so called big clubs he'd have made the squad, selfishly I'm OK with that but England as a team would be greatly enhanced by Dunks inclusion.

Silly Southgate (or whoever it is that picks the team now)

Did Jesse Lingard score or assist a PL goal?

May 2018: no
Aug 2018: no
Sep 2018: no
Oct 2018: no
Nov 2018: no
Dec 2018: YES (4G 2A)
Jan 2019: no
Feb 2019: no
Mar 2019: no
Apr 2019: no
May 2019: no
Aug 2019: no

Lingard's last involvement in a goal - ANY goal - was an assist for Pogba against Huddersfield, on Boxing Day. Since then - absolutely nothing.

Excellent Gareth. Excellent. :clap2:

Reminds me of this

Sorry Easy but I really don't think that's how it works. Southgate recognised him enough to get him into back to back squads. He's looked at him and assessed him close up. He's given him a cap. Do you honestly think he's forgotten about him? He knows what he wants in a player and has seen whether Dunk fits the bill. Clearly he doesn't think he does fully so now he's looking at other fringe players.

This is what he said about Mings:

“I really like his leadership qualities – he is an outstanding athlete and I see a lot of room for improvement.”

Maybe he just doesn't think there's the same room for improvement in Dunk. Maybe he thinks this is near enough as good as it gets for him? It's up to Lewis to show Southgate that it isn't.

I might be wrong but I'd be massively surprised if asked about why no Lewis Dunk, Southgate responded with a quizzical look and a 'who?'

Perhaps he would have been, but perhaps not.

For my money though all of the central defenders named in the squad, (with the possible exception of Tyrone Mings), are better than Dunk at the moment.

Disappointed for Dunk but being a parochial fan of the club I'm absolutely delighted he hasn't been picked. Last thing we need is him getting injured in a meaningless friendly.

I’m old enough to remember players having to have at least one season playing consistently well at the top level before earning an England cap.
No offence to Mount & Mings but 3/4 games into a season, come on.

100% - you didn't see players just breaking through walking straight into the first team. I can only really think of Wayne Rooney jumping straight into the squad, even Gerrard and Lampard had to play in the u21s beforehand. James Milner, on the other hand, had to play 50 times for the u21s until he got himself into the full squad.

I can kind of understand bringing in Mason Mount, a young player with huge potential and will possibly be an important player in the future. He gets the experience of training and travelling with the squad, getting on the bench and really becoming part of the group. I think Mount's got a better chance of playing than some of the other players who have been included in squads recently - but I do like the general idea. It's just a bit frustrating seeing players not really having to earn a place in the squad, when you then have Dunk who has been superb for 2 Premier League seasons and would need a plague to break out in order to make the squad.

Also, Jesse Lingard in the squad again. That's one of the biggest jokes, especially considering how likely that useless non-footballer is to actually start the game.
