i just can't help thinking that bringing extra full backs is a slight waste if they can't perform anywhere else

That would argue the case for Hargreaves and Milner then. Both are capable full backs.

Upson
Johnson
A. Cole
Carrick
Stevie G
Lamps
Becks

Leaves another four spots up for grabs, a goalkeeper, some cover wide and full back cover.

I'd go for Foster, Bridge, Ashley Young and Micah Richards

Again - Carlton Cole is far from definite, as is Carrick. Both have underperformed badly when given the chance in an England shirt.

whilst carrick has never been THAT good for england, i always have in my mind that he's pretty much the most consistent performer for the best team in the country

he must have something about him?

One thing's for sure - there are going to be some very good and very disappointed players.

In my squad, for example, there are players I do rate who aren't in like Hargreaves, Lescott, Richards, Milner, Wright-Phillips, Carlton Cole and Bent.

I'd have Stephen Warnock over Wayne Bridge (if one of the two was going).

Just saying, like.

His break up play and range of passing for ManUre is excellent, sadly he just seems to go missing in an England shirt. Might be another one of those players who amazing as they are at club level, can never bring their domestic form to international level.

Crodo....

Milner will DEFINITELY go. Capello well rates him.

I agree with Tooting's original selection with 2 exceptions:

Foster for Loach
Gary Neville for Cahill.

Here, I think Foster did alright last night, he did well in the League Cup Final, I buy the idea that the third keeper chosen needs to be selected with one eye on the future, but Foster is known to the players and now's not the time to be bringing in totally new faces.

I'd also pick Gary Neville as a back-up right-back, cover for centre back, his experience, it will help Beckham, he can also do a lot of the donkey work with the media because he's one of the few footballers who is articulate, leaving the key players to get on with the job in hand. He's also be relatively fresh through lack of games played.

I think the unfortunate thing is that in Carrick's two biggest tests, he came up short and was made to look average.

vs. Barca
vs. Spain

Carrick is right on the cusp. He has an ability to keep the ball AND play the killer pass, whereas Hargreaves is a less offesnive player.

I like Milner and can see him still running full pelt in the second half of extra time while all else will be wilting around him. His selection may well depend on how Joe Cole does coming back from injury. Given the fact they've got the transfer ban and there's African Nations Cup he should get plenty of game time.

Carrick's (non)showings against Barca and Spain prove we NEED Hargreaves for clashes against the very best midfields in the world.

We need someone who will work their arse off destroying and breaking up opponents passing moves in midfield, freeing up the likes of Lampard. That's Hargreaves, not Barry or Carrick.
