Anyway, taking Hales as baseline for "atrocious":

He's 5th on the list of runs scored by England openers since Strauss' retirement (out of 20)
12th by average
4th by the number of 50s
9th by high score

That's an indictment if there ever was one.

Blimey, I was going purely by memory rather than anything. I suppose maybe there was an element of failing to live up to hype with Hales (coming in as "the English answer to David Warner") whereas with Roy everyone knew he'd be shite so nobody was surprised.

India moaning about the ball, it past the ring test, complain again and again still goes through the ring yet umpires change it. Oh dear poor India the new one goes to the boundary even better

Even if India hadn't batted a lead of 4 without a wicket (or 2) is a huge improvement on the last test.

Shami & Bumrah scored more runs in the 2nd innings of the 2nd test than the entire Indian team managed today. Madness.

Our pace attack looks very one paced. To have Wood, Archer, Broad & Woakes out at the same time is a massive blow. And of course we miss Stokes at batsman, bowler and slip fielder.

Very hard to look past an India win here.

NSC Gold. :lolol:

Must admit even I (Mr Chase the odds) didn't bet on England this time.

Day 1 of a test doesn't get much better than this.

What do we reckon? England's day? I think we probably just shaded it.

That's why sport is popular, no-one could have predicted that after the shambles of the 5th day of the 1st Test.
No bad weather over the next 4 days, so not sure how there won't be an England win even at this early stage.

If there’s one team that could lose from here…
