Over the last 15 months I had several colonoscopies and sigmoidoscopies, all without sedation, other than for an local for an 11 hour operation in London exactly a year ago.

The worst part is taking the bowel clearing, much hated, med MoviPrep, diluted and downed in litres of water a few hours before the scopes. Disgusting stuff - tastes unpleasant and the ‘explosive’ effects.

Yes, up until this year I had Picolax which I always hated but it was always just a couple of small glasses of disgust. I had Moviprep this time and it was intolerable. By the end of the first lot I was reaching. I only sank a pint of the second lot before It was coming back up. Agreed, by far the worst part of this whole experience.
I saw a programme by Billie Connolly who had a colonoscopy in the States and all he had to do was take a couple of tablets and drink some water. He was moaning about having the shits! Wimp!

Gastroscopy this year, no drugs, they took a couple of biopsy's on the way out. Nice Welsh nurse talking to me, didn't watch the telly not a lot on, just stayed very calm still and eyes closed, in fact the doctor was worried I'd passed out! Uncomfortable but done, another due next year to check me Barrett's and I'm on Omeprazoles at the mo. Delights of the golden years.

Just had my biopsy phone call. Great news as all clear.
Have been put on the 3 year colonoscopy and moviprep plan. Wonder if I'll be able to look at the cables next time?

It's not fun but I didn't want to be sedated as I needed to go back to work.

Maybe think again if i had to have another.

Now for a colonoscopy, there was only ever one option :)

Exit only?

Mansfield Woodhouse, actually.
Moviprep, Move into the toilet prep more like
I had a colonoscopy last year, I worried about it for ages, but that Moviprep was by far the worse part, nobody told me what to expect ::ohmy:
With Movi Prep, you do need unrestricted access to a toilet. I found you get 20-30 seconds notice of the first 'evacuation' however after that, it was only about 5 seconds. Basically I was stuck on the toilet for about 3 hours with liquid forcing its way out of my bottom every few minutes. Still, I had NSC to pass the time.

Done both, must admit it's a tad more comfy after the jab.

Certainly if you're having the top and tail, double entry then sedation is the only way. Remember to ask them to wipe the camera tube after doing the colonoscopy BEFORE you have the sedation.

Have no idea what most of this means, but will no doubt be trying to revisit this thread in a few years time. Oh joy.

I’ve got to through this in June, for my first annual Colonoscopy checkup, post Feb19 op.

Dreading the MoviPrep, everything else is harmless by comparison.

Don’t dread it, just be prepared!!! I sat drinking the the stuff thinking, meh whats the big deal. Then.....

Ohhhhh.....my........god!!!!!

Seriously though I have had both endos (I regularly have Gastro ones) and got sedation for both, not worth putting yourself through the procedure when drugs are on offer!! Just make sure they don’t fob you off with a small dose, ask for as much as they can give you!

I’ve endured MoviPrep a couple of times before in the last 15 months :(

No real complaints, it gives life saving specialists a ‘clear view’ of potential The Big C.

Too far from the sun
Remembered this thread from a few months ago and re-read it last night as I'm having gastroscopy done on Thursday. As a direct result of the comments in this thread - and with great thanks to the contributors - I will be going for the sedation option. I am also extremely grateful that I'm not having the other end done, sounds grim to me!

I've had a few colonoscopies over the years, some with sedation and some without.
The only time I had any trouble was when a trainee carried out the procedure under supervision. It was rather uncomfortable and I was a wee bit tender for a few days after.
As,I think, Knocky said, the worst bit is the damn' fasting beforehand.
Thankfully I have no experience of an endoscopy; they sound horrible!

Oh dear, having said that I have no experience of an endoscopy, I now have to have one in an effort to diagnose most unpleasant and recurring stomach pains which are really bringing me low.
Haven't got a date from the hospital yet, but I hope it is soon as I am in quite a lot of discomfort.
GP said to go to A&E if they get worse...........I dare say the hospital will say, you should have gone to your GP with this!

Me too. It was spectacularly dramatic, but not much worse than the situation it was intended to help diagnose, to be fair.

A few years back I was really unwell for a number of years and as a result I had an endoscopy, a colonoscopy and a PH manometery test.
The endoscopy was uncomfortable to say the least, not something I enjoyed at all, the colonoscopy was on a different level altogether though. I was sedated for that and the pain actually woke me briefly, I mumbled a few profanities and passed out again. While I fully understand that they're a necessity in some cases, I hope I never have to have one again.
The PH manometery test was hideous. Having a constant line down your throat for 24hrs, especially if you have a sensitive gag reflex, is beyond uncomfortable. I actually removed the tube myself after a few hours, something which I got a rollicking for at the hospital (and rightly so)

The wife's having a PH Manometery test on Weds next week , she's not looking forward to it but having been through Breast cancer and a double mastectomy in recent years I'm sure she'll cope . she's a lot stronger than me !

I'm sure it differs from person to person, but I couldn't deal with the constant gagging. She may be absolutely fine, and it sounds like she's been through tougher so this should be a breeze for her.

She's been through a lot over the past 15 years mate so I'm sure she'll be fine, seems to take everything in her stride .
