Lets be honest he used to have a bout 1 good game in 10, hardly ever got any goals and often performed like a lumbering, confidenceless goon. Now he seems to care less what people think and has adapted to use his attributes to their best. Good on him I say but lets not get pretend he was then what he is now.
He played well against Israel and Russia and his job was to run around, muscle defenders and win headers.
That style of play is why we will beat teams like Russia, Estonia et al but never make the step up to world champions or having a decent pop at an international tournament.
The context is that Israel and Russia are decent teams. Israel were undefeated in the last world cup qualifiers drawing home and away with France and Switzerland. Russia haven't lost a game in qualifying. Heskey played well and deserves his place.
I'm fairly certain the current world champion's main striker's job was "to run around, muscle defenders and win headers". And the previous European Championship final was contested by two teams with 'Heskey-like' players.
