There seems to be quite a bit of split opinion with regards to who should have that starting birth to partner Capt Greer at the start of this season.

So who is it for you an why ?

Ignoring any of the field issues ofcourse :)

El-Abd.

If we start with Dunk he'll be suspended by September and El-Abd will be playing anyway.

Either will do me. In fact why not have both and leave Greer out?

Sorry to hog this! I didn't say why. El-Abd was immense against Reading, Dunk was immense against Burnley (home games). Based purely on that - Greer was just "excellent".

You could add "either" and "both, leave Greer out" as options instead of forcing a choice between the two?

But the idea is you have to choose, as we are all 99.9% certain that Gus will play Greer. ;-)

For what its worth I would choose Dunk. For the reason he is a much better footballer, his defending is improving all the time, and he is only going to get better.

I don't see why there's a split.

El Abd and Greer ARE the first choice centre back partnership, and with very good reason. Dunk's got a way to go yet to usurp either of them.

Then I toss a coin and it comes up Dunk.

We're also 99.9% sure that Gus will start El Abd, as he pretty much always starts when fit. Also, saying that Dunk is a much better footballer is a ridiculous statement.

El Abd has consistently been a FANTASTIC Championship centre back, dealing comfortably with some of the best strikers we've seen playing the Albion in the last decade. Dunk has had a few games in and out, looked impressive in some, naive in others.

Exactly my assessment along with the view of Mellotron. Interesting no ones mentioned Elphick. He would have played ahead of Dunk last season if he'd been fit.

Really ?

I dont think El-Abd is anything like a 99.9% starter in the side, and honestly I can see that El-Abd has improved his footballing skills greatly under Gus but to say his ability on the ball is close to that of Dunk's is quite remarkable.

Either way. Whoever starts I dont mind as I rate both highly.

I can't see any way that Elphick will play at all next season. I thought he looked fairly vulnerable at League One - he certainly struggled with the concept of not just hoofing it aimlessly up field. Calde is a better option at centre half.

If it wasn't for his injury I reckons he would have been on his way last season.

A tad harsh on Elphick i feel, however I cant see him geting much game time, however we probably would have said the same of Dunk this time last year.

Elphick like El-Abd is a proper club man and very well liked amongst the squad Id have him around just for that alone.

Dunk may be better on the ball (something I'm not certain of) but El-Abd it a better defender. He makes the tackles Greer and Dunk don't make i.e. the ones where he literally gets any part of his body in the way.

Dunk is a more cultured defender and as such is too similar to Greer and I think we concede more soft goals when Greer and Dunk play together.

Also, you can't underestimate the wind-up factor of El-Abd. Some on here don't like it but he riles up opposition strikers better than any Albion defender in years and this is great for me!
