Been watching this program about him and northerners egg chasing - apparently there was a game in the 70s, that was live on TV, where a border collie was on the pitch for almost the entire game :lolol:

I saw some film on youtube of Gaelic Football I think it was where the same thing happened. Dog was on the pitch for ages as the game carried on. Lovely stuff.

Decent programme, but the 'rub' came near the end and even todays Rugby League has not been able to change it. Say Rugby League and what are the next two words ? You know the answer. Out of interest cant stand it !

Nevermind that Michael are you going to bring an animal to release onto the pitch for the MK Dons game?
If everyone does it the stewards will be overrun and we can shout, stand up, smoke and swig from hip flasks to our heart's content as they won't be paying attention.

That's one of the most intruiging posts I ever seen on NSC. What 'rub'? Why can't thry change it? And what two words come DO after, or come to mind after, saying 'Rugby League'?

Genuinely interested in the answers!

I didnt see the programme. What happened to him? Booze? Or illness? Dont remember much of it being made when he cashed his chips in?

He developed dementia whilst at the BBC, so in his final years he could not remember the names of players, and would just shout out "It's a try/tackle/ Substitution etc".

Auntie didn't want to kick him out so they managed to persuade him to retire at the top, and there was footage of his final interview before the Challenge Cup Final with David Coleman, where a clearly not quite with it Eddie was reduced to rambling.

He then spent his final years in an asylum, and didn't talk for the last few years.

He was treated appallingly by the Rugby League authorities, who thought he was being used by the BBC to promote a pro-Union bias, with him as a northern caricature who they (the BBC) could sneer at.

I remember watching that game on Grandstand as a kid. The dog always kept behind the play and at conversions it would lie down waiting for the kick to take place. Once the ball was kicked it would immediately get up and run around.

You certainly wouldn't get that in todays game.
