Not sure what your budget is. Business or pleasure ?

I have stayed on business in the Niko Hotel, which is strangely a Japanese Hotel, but good value for a high quality business hotel and easy walking distance from the station.

Schumacher's Brauerei Schumacher GmbH - Düsseldorf is highly recommended. (and close to the Niko) Alt Bier is similar to Kolsch if you have been to Cologne (just don't let the locals hear you say that, as they have an intense rivalry). I had a very memorable night here, when they brewed there once a year special brew to thank their customers. By the way please don't drink bottles of either Kolsch or Alt bier. Both are okay from bottles, but are top class drunk fresh from the barrel.

My gf son lived there when I was living in Germany and visited a couple of times...theres an area down by the river that seemed packed when I was there...full of bars, outside seating etc... seemed fairly decent, but wasnt there long

thanks, pleasure by the way to be exact, a stag doo, a flea pit's fine if the location's good and it's beer and brothels (not neccesarily brothels but you get my gist)

I went there on a stag do earlier this year.. I did a tour around the uerige brewery.. http://www.uerige.de/en/start/
The whole old town is full of cool bars (it is know as the longest bar in the world) and you can head to the main train station for the strip joints etc..
Hotel we stayed in wasnt all that, dont remember the name...

Fortuna Dusseldorf are currently top of division 2 and play here at the Esprit Arena. You could always check it out if you have the chance.

I worked in Dusseldorf for 3 months in 1980 whilst I was travelling around europe. I loved it there. Go into the Aldstat near the river. Lively bars stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Can't comment on places to stay as I was in either the Youth Hostel or Student Digs.

Saw Fortuna V Borussia Mönchengladbach whilst there. Lively local Derby. They were both in the top divsion then.

Stag do , probably best to go with the river and station recommendations. Dusseldorf is well both a little quiet and sensible, but I am sure if you look hard enough, you will find the right type of entertainment.

we're more of a heavy drinking/football/male bonding type of group than a 'dress the groom up as Tarzan while the rest of the party pretend to be golfers with pink hats' group

Went in January last year but as I visited and stayed with friends I can't help with hotels. However,as others have said, the area by the river is good. The beer is great and you could still smoke in some if the bars then. From what I saw of it it is a nice city with loads of drinking places . Don't mention the war though and for Gods sake don't pretend to be Greek !! :)

Went to Dusseldorf this summer and loved the place.

One pub that stood out for us was Im Fuchschen. They served really good Alt beer - it's the kind of place where the barman just takes it for granted that everyone will drink the local brew.

If you eat there, don't have anything for ages before - the portions are humungous. I'm getting nostalgic just thinking about the spare ribs I had.

Füchschen - Altbier Brauerei Düsseldorf

Other than that, the area east of the river has loads of places to go out in.

Just racked my brains for other suggestions. Carlsplatz in the centre has a brilliant daily food market where you can buy almost any takeaway food imaginable. A must. Leading off the square is Bergerstrasse which has dozens of restaurants and the Uerige brewery at the end.

Don't bother with the Mediahafen area for going out - far more expensive food and drink. The TV Tower's okay if you like a good view!

Schlussel on Bolkerstasse is a great favourite to while away a massive Sunday lunch waiting for the plane home after a Schalke victory. Brilliant heavy duty German specials and loads of reasonably priced Altbier. Take note if going in winter it can be difficult to secure a table inside in the evening, which makes a bar hop difficult.

Great choice of town though, you won't be disappointed.
