Strange debate. CB is the one area where injuries and suspensions mean you need at least three top-performing operators, and that's what we've got now. Both Gordon and Uwe picked up yellows on Saturday, and that's going to happen regularly.

I think Greer seems to be building a good understanding with Uwe and has been instrumental in helping Dunk develop his game. He's also been a model pro and good club captain and is a current international.

All this criticism seems pretty bizarre to me. If he's moving into the next stage of his career (club captain and slowly passing the mantle to younger men), sobeit, but let's give him the respect he deserves along the way.

Please point me to the unwarranted criticism or disrespect in this thread? I have praised Greer multiple times.

Yeah I agree let's drop our captain, having only conceded twice in 5 games and after some very good performances, because that would be very fair wouldn't it. I think the way Greer is disregarded by some on this forum is downright disrespectful I've seen nothing this season that suggests to me Greer is 'past it' or 'slowing down' so what makes anyone think we should bring back Dunk straight away, the guy who refused outright to play for us, over our captain, amazing.

Until we have a bad few performances it would be exceptionally unfair to drop either Uwe or Greer, Dunk being out of the team is his own fault and he can stay there until we have a bad run

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing Dunk and Goldson in a partnership, purely because they are both solid in the air, both are reasonably quick, they are young, and between them have a dozen goals a season in them.
This in no way is a slur on GG nor am I saying Goldson is better than BfG, I would just like to see it, and I agree that we've started well so GG should keep his league place.
Dominance in the air in ours and the opposition penalty areas, whatever next.

You're not allowed to say that - that's being disrespectful. Apparently.

Greer started last season playing some of his best football.
He went off with Scotchland, and from then slowly lost that form.

Greer ended last season very slow, playing on the edge of our box, that left an awful lot of pitch for everyone else to cover.

He's quality but no quicker now and that'll bite him in the arse soon.

I think he was superb for the first 2-3 years. Last year he was unquestionably poor, and at fault for a large number of goals.

Really? Care to suggest which ones? As many as Dunk?

Agreed Mellotron - and sorry if it came across as directed at you. Have a look at the "Greer Stays as Captain" thread if you want to see where I was coming from.

This thread does raise the point again, with some comments heading in the same direction.

Don't big a dick. Greer gets blamed by many on here and at games every time we concede even when it's clearly nothing to do with him. He wasn't talking about you.

I just don't understand how such a successful club captain can be so unpopular, relatively speaking.

Kayal is apparently a nightmare off the pitch, perhaps that's why Celtic binned him off on the cheap. But it's trendy to think he's captain purely as he's the closest thing we have to a midfield engine.

Meanwhile Greer is apparently a bad captain because he can't jump and sometimes bollocks players.

Baffling.

Greer is one of the clubs longest serving players and provided loyal service over the last 5 years. He's led the club to a L1 championship and 2 top 6 Championship finishes largely built on a solid back four. He's been part of the Championship's best defence for several seasons and a defence that even last season out performed most clubs outside the top 6.
He's an international, conducts himself well off the pitch, and rightly imposes leadership on it. He's convinced 4 managers that he should be first choice centre-back and captain including Hughton this year.
You'd think he should be contender for player of the season most years and up there with Calde as a club legend. Yet conversely he receives little respect from the stands and sometimes on here. In my view he's the most underrated player in the team. He'll be playing alongside Dunk or Hune this season , if he stays fit.

Mix the three up this year and then ship GG out next summer.

Pretty much this for me. No need to ship him out after this year if he's happy being back up/4th choice. I'd imagine he'd prefer a free transfer, a starting birth and one last pay day (and no shame in that).

Rotating with 2 from Dunk, Hune and Greer in the league, with Goldson a regular + one of the others in the cups (league cup at least). With injuries / loss of form and/or rests, Goldson should get some games in the league too.

Just enough to keep everyone happy, but plenty of depth/options for the club

Goldson can't play in the League Cup, unfortunately.

Brighton / Hove actually
I think that we will continue to play the same system as we are now but with refs giving cards like confetti at a wedding we will need the 4 CB that we have and they will all be rotated as needed I think that it is possible that GG will return to Scotland during the January window to finish his career back home. Has he taken any coaching badges or indeed is that his chosen route for later life.

It certainly means we can absorb cards and suspensions, so instead of treading on eggshells they can afford to be a bit tougher. No to mention not having to play with niggling injuries and making them worse. It’s a long season and 4 CB’s will be needed.

I appreciate the op hasn't criticised Greer within his request for a new central defensive partnership, but I do feel Greer's contribution and performances for the club are vastly under rated and appreciated.

Very rarely does he receive the plaudits for 5 years of solid performances, leading the team to some of the best league finishes in decades.

For me he's right up there with some of our best centre half's since I started watching the Albion, in terms of longevity and performances. It seems strange he's not revered and celebrated in the same way that Cullip, Morgan & Upson were despite contributing more than any of them across an Albion career.

All of this.
