fair enough. I'm still seething from yesterday. That game was there for the taking but we concede two goals through defensive errors (don't get me started!) then have a mountain to climb.

Why is it that every time we take a big away support to London the team fails to perform? Palace, Millwall, Brentford, QPR, Orient, Wimbledon, (also Southend, Watford, Bournemouth and Colchester). Ok there have been a couple of exceptions but it's usually a dismal trip home from "town".

The time to bring in the youngsters is when we know we've got nothing to play for. I think we'll be there or thereabouts to the end unfortuantly for them. I'm in favour of giving the youngsters a chance but to play them now would see no improvement imo.

The person who should get a chance though is Marney. He's no longer a kid. 21 isn't he? He needs to prove himself now. He did well in Division 1, especially at Watford. With Hart struggling to find his old form Marney deserves a chance. El-Abd, Hinsh etc have had chances. Now it's Marney's turn.
Some of the youngsters are better than players in the team. Harding is much stronger than so-called hard man Oatway.

Sorry but Marney isn't a youngster and is on his way into non-league football where he belongs...hard world!

Yes. I did say Marney is no longer a youngster. Which is why, like McPhee, he deserves a chance.

Your midfield would have been Hart Carpenter Yeates Harding I presume yesterday.

As far as I'm concerned in a game against one of the best sides in the league you need expirence. Yeates and Harding would have been to inexpirienced for such a big game imo.

Marney is older than McPhee and has less talent.
My midfield would not have included that over-rated showboater Yeates. Can't pass, can't take corners, will never score etc.
The best thing about McGhee is that he is giving our young players a chance ...except Hinsh. The game is all about opinions and I 'd like it if you were right about Marney but he does not look any better than a lot of non-league players. Sam Francis of Worthing is a better striker imo.

Marney's problem - which to an extent is also Robinson's problem - is that we already have a short-arse striker who is fairly injury and suspension free.

That means that they will probably not start a match but will only ever be brought on when it looks like an extra dimension is needed - as at QPR or the Oldham home game - or if Knight goes off.

Hinshelwood is our best option in this position imho. I really do not rate Watson. El Abd is still not ready for this role yet but has a lot of promise.

Brings it back to trying a 5 man defence. With our shortage to midfielders at the moment, it might tighten things up a bit.

I have been thinking whether that will ever happen. I think El-Abd could do a job at wing back.

Hinsh, Cullip and Butters as the 3 centre backs would be a very strong trio.

Having watched the goals on Meridian yesterday, I can't really have a go at Watson for the second. He was left exposed as the last man, and as he went for the ball, he wa clearly trying not to bring Gallen down otherwise he'd have been sent off.

The first goal, on the other hand, was ridiculous, Rowlands picked the ball up virtually on the half way line, and to be allowed to run all the way into our area without so much as a challenge was a joke. Everyone in the crowd was thinking "don't back off, don't back off", you could almost hear it. What kind of schoolboy defending was Watson up to, I bet McGhee was going mental at half time.

Noticed he was picked for the Sports First 2nd Division Team of the Week though, how the hell does that work?

Would also criticise Mayo, every time we play decent opponents (and I really didn't think QPR even looked half decent on Saturday), he is ruthlessly exposed, and was just as bad as Watson.

The speciality set pieces that formed the main reason Watson's inability to defend was overlooked have been completely missing for the last season and a half. For Gods sake Cullip takes as many if not more free kicks than Watto now !!! I mean what the hell is that about ??? Surely Cullip is someone you'd want in the box to get on the end of the ball ? Given that McGhee didn't explode with anger I can only assume little things like that are down to his own instructions, much like the pathetic short throw in and short corner (to Oatway for heavens sake - possibly the worst passer of the ball we have).

Yes QPR were good through the middle and up front but I thought they were very average and basic in defence. The ball straight out for a throw or a corner was their main tactic. We should have capitalised more on this but too many of our players contributed nothing on the day, again most noticeably in midfield. Oatway and Carpenter had no influence at all. Yeates huffed and puffed and looked all very showy again but with only minimal effect. Watson offered a little in attack but was the match loser at the back, Mayo's performance was very poor again.

All these problems yet we could still have got a point. That's the frustrating thing about the whole situation.

i think we should have el abd back in. and talking of getting forward to put crosses in. well it is not really the defenders job. but nevermind watson i saw el abd put a couple of brilliant crosses in away to notts county. should never have been dropped.
and to add to that i have always thought our worse player since 3rd div championship has always been mayo. can anybody remember liddle at wigan ripping him to shreads in their 4.0 win. a winger shouldnt get a hatrick as easily as that.

None of the three candidates mentioned have put in consistently good performances. Both Hinshelwood and El Abd have done well for a bit and then had 2 or 3 bad games, costing them their places. Watson is no better than either of them. It does seem to be a problem position
