I thought Watto was at fault for both goals yesterday. He let Rowlands run from an innocuous position to score without challenging him, and for the second goal, when it was Gallen v Watto one on one, you just knew that he was going to end up on his arse within five seconds.

On the plus side, his corners and free kicks were better, provided Charlie did not dash 40 yards for a short corner that always had 'disaster' written on it

I really can't take anymore of this...how does watson keep getting picked? what is wrong with el-abd,hinsh,virgo?,why has pethick gone out on loan?
Every week i waste my hard earned money watching watson getting turned inside out by very average div2 attackers, does he get picked on the basis that he's one of our highest earners??

If you're going to play 3 in midfield, it would be far better to go 4-3-3 with you-know-how wide right of the front 3. IMHO, 5-3-2 is far too defensive and even more boring than we are at the moment, especially at home.

With respect we played 5 at the back for most of last season under Coppell and it meant that we ground results out. I would rather see us win 1-0 rather than flowing football and keep saying we were unlucky to lose.

We are not doing the basics well and at the moment we need to build from the back.

I can understand playing Watson when we need a team with experience who might hope to grind out victories because IMHO Hinshelwood and El-Abd are capable of much worse howlers.

But now we have nothing to lose, let's think to the future and play El-Abd. With more first-team experience he will turn out to be a quality defender and be less inclined to make mistakes.

El-Abd maybe, but never Hinsh.. he's going to be a good centre back, but never a full back.

The biggest problem with Watson is he cant do what hes meant to do, which is defend.

Defending normally means either holding up really close to a player or getting a challenge in... but he cant do either....

He was good at set pieces and corners a couple of seasons ago, but cant even do that now. Hes a :censored: liability....

So who put the ball on Cullip's head for our goal then?

Who is the only right fullback willing to to get forward and link up with the midfield?

Watson is expirienced. He has an undertsanding with Cullip, Carpenter and Hart. The players mostly around him.

El-Abd and Hinshelwood are to scared to go forward. They're not expirienced enough and will make mistakes.. El Abd's at Q.P.R. In the LDV anyone...?

Watson is far from the best full back in this division but he's the best we've got. Oh and his left foot gives us a unique option when he supports the midfield.

Turkey - I don't think anyone disputes that he gives us options going forward (although could do with a goal or two). But he lacks basic defending skills which are costing us points. He keeps backing off and seems afraid to put a challenge in.

Needs to pull his socks up sharpish or he will lose his place.

We don't have enough options going forward as it is. We seem devoid of ideas. El-Abd or Hinshelwood might defend better but they won't help us as much in an attacking sense. Surely to play more defencive players would be a mistake. We need to be scoring goals to win matches.

We put in a good performance yesterday against a team far to good for this division and the players gave it there all. I had no complaints and I know I'm not the only person who felt we could be pleased with the lads yesterday.

What was the game where El-Abd tore up the field and put in an inch-perfect cross for a goal. Admittedly it was straight after he'd stuffed up at the other end....

Notts County.

I found an old Argus article the other day about El Abd turning down Manchester United to sign for the Albion.

Good point Lush, which I was about to make as well. To say El Abd will not be any good from an attacking perspective is a tad unfair I think. Give me El Abd to Watto any day of the week.

I've posted about Watson so many times I couldn't be bothered to speak about El-Abd's assist at Notts County.

It's a fair point though and I usually mention it when talking about the right back position. It was straight after he had given away a penalty. Whether it was or wasn't a penalty it was still El-Abd who's naieveness (is that a word) let the guy get himself into a position to go down. He did very well to help up the other end of the pitch but I don't think he does that enough. Although an extended run in the team and some good coaching could see that change.

The time to bring in the youngsters is when we know we've got nothing to play for. I think we'll be there or thereabouts to the end unfortuantly for them. I'm in favour of giving the youngsters a chance but to play them now would see no improvement imo.

The person who should get a chance though is Marney. He's no longer a kid. 21 isn't he? He needs to prove himself now. He did well in Division 1, especially at Watford. With Hart struggling to find his old form Marney deserves a chance. El-Abd, Hinsh etc have had chances. Now it's Marney's turn.

That was more of a practical decision than a love for the club. Plus United try to sign a lot of young players. You can end up not making it there and not getting a chance anywhere else.

ok so we all have our opinions, we see different things, have our favourites, rose tinted glasses, etc, etc, but almost to a person we all agree about Watson - he is just not good enough (anymore?). I hope he proves me wrong with a number of o/s performances for the rest of the season but look at the comments in this thread, look at the scores on the "marks for yesterday" thread, (and last week's and previous weeks) - are we all wrong?

Turkey - I commend your loyalty but can only conclude that your seat faces in a different direction to the rest of us or that you are deliberately tring to wind me up - YOU HAVE SUCCEEDED!!!!!

Watson's primary role is to defend. Corners and free kicks are a bonus - please remind me the last time he troubled the keeper with a free kick.

I'm pretty sure he had a free kick on target on one our recent matches. Keeper made a relatively easy save down to his right though.

It's not loyalty to Watson. I just honestly think he's the best option we've got a right back. I'm not trying to wind you up either.

I think people need someone to blame and turn on the weakest links without considering what they bring to the team.

Maybe Watson isn't the best we've got. I'm not 100% convinced he is but at least by arguing about it we're discussing football and not the size of Jordans thong.
