Hmmm is the South Terminal still open for passengers arriving by car though? Maybe the approach road is blocked off to private motorists.

I don't know, l haven't had the need to go there for quite a while.

It was open for parking in September. Gatwick offered cheaper parking in South Short stay despite no flights at South.

Charge people arriving by bus and train a £5 fee as well as cars. Will help the airport recover lost funds quicker. People spending stacks of money anyway to fly are hardly going to miss this trifling added cost.

I’m not sure how workable this is, but in principle I wouldn’t be against the idea.

When spending £1,000’s on family holidays and flights, I’m not going to get agitated about this relatively trifling added cost.

Gatwick is losing probably the best part of £1B, and passenger numbers might take 5 years to recover. A few NSC’ers have made it clear that they hope this is the end of mass travel by flight, to help save the planet, so it might never recover.

I don’t blame the airport this time around.

wouldnt it be better to have the money simply made up on the flights and stuff in the airport? its a trifling amount for the traveller, the kicker will be for those dropping/collecting who forget and get the invoice for £100 following week. it just seems like a shitty thing to charge for.

Regarding “the kicker” I’m certain there will be a pre-payment option which will mitigate against forgetting and most likely be cheaper.

And if the money is “made up on the flights and stuff in the airport” then people who use other modes of transport pay for something they don’t use. I fully appreciate paying for something which was previously free is never popular but as Weststander points out, flying is a luxury; I’d feel strongly about an extra tenner on bus or trains but not planes.

Female PA Announcer: No, the white zone is for loading. Now, there is no stopping in a RED zone.
Male PA Announcer: The red zone has always been for loading.
Female PA Announcer: Don't you tell me which zone is for loading, and which zone is for unloading.
Male PA Announcer: Look Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again. There's just no stopping in a white zone.
Female PA Announcer: Oh really, Vernon? Why pretend, we both know perfectly well what this is about. You want me to have an abortion.
Male PA Announcer: It's really the only sensible thing to do. If its done safely, therapeutically, there's no danger involved.
And based on a real life incident at LAX.

I thought they decided NOT to charge for drop-offs and pick ups as it meant cars could park for a longer period than just 'pulling over'. Now a car can block a space for a while whilst kissing and saying your goodbyes rather than pull up, shove the cases on the curb and dash off smiling at the warden.

Good point....will be worse under these arrangements as people will be stopped for longer.

‘Move along please Sir’

‘**** off, I’ve paid for 10 minutes, I’m going to and get a coffee first’.

good points, its usually fairer to expect only those using a service to pay for it.

I’m surprised it lasted this long being free, it says if memory serves, you can park in their long term car park for free and jump on the rail, so if you’re being extra tight, do that. It’s common practice around airports these services come at a price as they’re monitored with stewards. Fair play to them really.

I took a wrong turn trying to get to Maccies so had to drive through the drop off area. It’s a one way system so had no choice and I didn’t stop.

Got whacked with a £100 fine but reduced to £15 if I pay within 14 days. A gesture of goodwill apparently.

Be warned if you’re near Gatwick and fancy a Big Mac!
