Sounds like something the Bank's would dream up . Petty and cash grabbing and they want us to feel sorry for their current predicament !

Given the financial issues facing the aviation industry I expect to see more of this in the future. It’s inevitable.

And expanding on this. I feel that other sectors will see increases as well. Maybe a few extra quid in cafes and restaurants, extra on beer etc. I certainly see an end to rock bottom flights.....or maybe a few seats at eye catching prices and many more at extra prices.

That link says that the charge only relates to the North terminal (on account of all flights going out of there atm) and will be introduced at the South terminal 'at a later date'. Presumably the South terminal is still open for passengers arriving by train. So if that £5 is important to you, just ask to get dropped off at the South terminal and use the free shuttle to the North terminal. Simples.

Hmmm is the South Terminal still open for passengers arriving by car though? Maybe the approach road is blocked off to private motorists.

I don't know, l haven't had the need to go there for quite a while.

Hopefully it will free up the airport from carloads of non-mask wearing entitled rabble like the Westdene’s for more sophisticated and civilised world travellers like myself :lolol:

Let's hope Covid stops the idiots jumping on a flight at a whim just to watch a football match while still claiming to be carbon neutral ( despite any normal being understanding there is no such thing as a carbon neutral flight )

Important and essential travel. And I have explained this before.

EasyJet are carbon neutral, all the facts are here https://www.easyjet.com/en/sustainability

But, the eco warrior in me won’t just settle for this. So

Brewdog are carbon negative brewery. https://www.brewdog.com/tomorrow

And Punk IPA is sold on Brewdog flights. The selfless act, and the simple maths, of a couple of Punks whilst mile high means I am now traveling carbon negative. Shoulder to shoulder with Greta...not literally as she prefers the train or a boat but I’m sure you get my drift.

You’re welcome.

Drop off a long stay gives 2 hours free, so expect this to be used, until Gatwick start charging for this also.

The few times I've used long stay it's been quite shite. I found long intervals between buses and often a v long queue at the airport end to get back so allow more time than you think you need...............when travelling myself I've given up with it - only use either valet parking, short stay or meet and greet these days - if booked in advance it's hardly any more expensive than long stay.

Don't start up with your white zone shit again!

Female PA Announcer: No, the white zone is for loading. Now, there is no stopping in a RED zone.
Male PA Announcer: The red zone has always been for loading.
Female PA Announcer: Don't you tell me which zone is for loading, and which zone is for unloading.
Male PA Announcer: Look Betty, don't start up with your white zone shit again. There's just no stopping in a white zone.
Female PA Announcer: Oh really, Vernon? Why pretend, we both know perfectly well what this is about. You want me to have an abortion.
Male PA Announcer: It's really the only sensible thing to do. If its done safely, therapeutically, there's no danger involved.

All it’s going to do is cause the majority of cars go to South Terminal for drop off or pick up. Then when it is so crowded there the airport will charge for that which will get people pulling over on slip roads etc. Just let cars have 10 minutes free and no return in an hour. Stops people driving round and round or parking up in the drop off areas. Overstay or visit again with an hour and then charge.

Charge the people you are dropping off a fiver then. You aren't out of pocket and they save on a taxi. Sorted.

Exactly, people spend thousands to go on holiday, but begrudge paying extra to the airport that facilitates that flight. They'll probably spend more on a pint of beer in the terminal!! At least on the link they are honest about it being a revenue stream.

Seen a lot of 'waiting compounds' inside (or very near) overseas airports - basically you park up (for free - they look a bit like disused industrial areas typically) and wait for your pickup to call you and say they're ready - hence no-one ends up waiting in the dropzone for any length of time. I guess problem at Gatwick is that would be taking up 'valuable real estate'.

Good point. Punters will happily pour 10 pints of lager down their throat over a full English before staggering onto the plane to Benidorm but complain about a few quid to be dropped off.

Did you read the link? They state that all flights are currently going from the North Terminal but that they will be introducing the charge to the south terminal in due course.

Cell Phone lots are very popular here in the USA and have cut down on the cruising traffic. They are typically about a couple of miles away.

Absolutely this! Little Britain in a nutshell. More people could easily get public transport and that’s what they’re trying to encourage here too. People need to get over selves. An extra tenner isn’t going to prevent you going on holiday. If it does, you’ve got your budget planning seriously wrong. If travelling for business, you probably charge it back on expenses.

Looking forward to Barber charging £5 to be dropped off

Why wouldn’t they be getting the many more sustainable, safer and easier options already?
