Driving tests for the over 60s

re-tests every 10 years - not as strict as first test, more based on driving competance & highway code stuff.
65+ re-test every 3 years

I think when I'm 70 (sadly not too far off) I have to re-apply for a licence although unless there are medical grounds there's no re-test yet.

Re-testing under 25's on an annual basis however would be a great idea - in my experience there would be very few of them left on the roads

I think that everybody who gets banned, for whatever reason should have to take a test before getting their license back. Also when a license expires, at 70 years old, the license should be renewed for 5 years and every 5 years thereafter with a retest for every renewal. Yes I know I shall be 70 in a couple of years so it would apply to me.

The trouble with re-tests is they're bloomin' expensive... Would certainly create some jobs though...

I've always thought that you should have to get full marks in the theory test. Being able to get five wrongor whatever it is, is a joke. "yeah, I got them all right except for summat about a red light, and I couldve sworn that a 30 inside a red circle meant you had to go at least that speed"...

Dvla are unable to cope with doing their job correctly with their present workload so the idea although good is a non starter in my book. By the way they took me off the road for twelve weeks last summer due to them mis interpretting a set of results on a field vision test i took.

At the moment I am not liking old people drivers, because I had to literally jump out of the road on Sunday morning as one ploughed through a pedestrian crossing I was, erm, crossing. However, I also agree with the sentiment the most crashes seem to be young drivers, especially male.

Maybe we could have a more strict probation period for 2 years after passing a test? Drivers over 70 need a medical as it is, just to check they are compus mentus. I'm npot sure how I would improve upon this.

Personally, as a driving instructor, I think re-tests every 10 years are a good idea as most people on the road would require some instruction either leading upto the test or after the test when they have to take it again. Should coincide with the renewal of your driving licence which is now every 10 years.

A nice additional revenue stream.

In fact it should be made illegal for anyone under 60 to drive.

Like most people my wife and I both have a license valid until our 70th birthday but she saw something about a renewal every 10 years and the DVLA said that only applied to the photograph that had to be renewed every 10 years not the actual licence, or that was how I understood it.

What about if they already have a driving licence ?

Like most people my wife and I both have a license valid until our 70th birthday but she saw something about a renewal every 10 years and the DVLA said that only applied to the photograph that had to be renewed every 10 years not the actual licence, or that was how I understood it.

I think the photograph has to be renewed every 10 years until you are 70, after which you have to have a medical every X years too.

I would opt for that but every 5 years. Mind you, seeing as how many motorists still drive with no MOT, Tax or Insurance let alone a license how effective would such legislation be ?

I think the paper part of the licence stays the same, its just the photocard that changes.
