Re-testing under 25's on an annual basis however would be a great idea - in my experience there would be very few of them left on the roads

With all due respect, if you randomly tested a cross section of people i suspect more under 25s would pass a driving test than any other age (except maybe 25-35). Doesn't mean their not more likely to crash mind

You don't have to have a medical at 70. Just renew your license, which basically means you meet the eyesight requirements, you have no medical conditions that DVLA need to know about and that you don't drive like a 25 year old or have an 18" diameter exhaust tailpipe on your car. :tosser:

Sadly I have to admit that one young member of my family, having lost his licence, then decided to resume driving without it when his ban ended! It was only when his parents threatened to report him to the police that he re-sat his test and is now street legal.

I do wonder though how many people ignore losing their licence (or indeed even bother with a test)? There are plenty of uninsured/untaxed cars out there and although ANPR makes that more risky there is no automised way of telling who is actually driving. I guess that's why re-testing - although a sound idea - is probably impractical. Too many people would just take no notice.

I said the same earlier. With the APR kit that the Police have now however the penny should soon drop with most people that they are much more likely to be caught. However I would like to see stiffer punishments. No insurance would mean a stiff fine and immediate year's ban. Driving without a license would be a manditory year in prison. The Police may be able to crush cars but that is not enough for some people obviously.

And for the 20 something stroppy females who think the rules of the road don't apply to them. You might want to include parking lessons for them and also explain that the 3rd lane on a motorway is not for females travelling at 60 mph.

I like driving threads.

That is not limited to women, you'll find more than a few middle aged men who have the same idea. It's worth noting that statistically women are better dtivers than me, probably because they don't see their car (no matter how pathetic it is) as an extension of their penis.

I see more inconsiderate, aggressive driving from the stroppy 20 something females than from anybody else. They can only drive safely in straight lines which is why they never change lanes on motorways and on country roads they are a menace-especially on bends. And don't get me started about their spatial awareness and parking capabilities.

All this 'penis extension' nonsense is just that-nonsense.

On4, 5 and 6 lane motorways, like the M25 sections, I would ban articulated lorries from all lanes apart from lane 1 and 2. the times you are driving along on a 4 lane motorway and the gits are driving three abreast each trying to overtake the other without the power to do so......and I am not a racist BUT it is normally the Eastern European fuckers who do this...oh and the French.

I would make them unload their goods at the ports, load them on to TRIED AND TESED ENGLISH lorrys and then have them drive them to where-ever they want to go.

I think you see what you want to see. I'm sure the statistics that women are better drivers than men is nonsense too in your (biased) opinion. You want to spend more time watching the road than other drivers.

I thought it was already the law that lorries are only allowed in lanes 1 and 2 on motorways... what we lack is somebody willing to enforce said law (or is the law simply that lorries are not allowed in the furthest right lane?).

I think the reason they're on our roads is that they are cheaper for our organisations that use them than our Tried and Tested English lorries and their drivers. Agree with what you say though.

Not racism, just an observation!

When on dual carriageways or motorways have a look at the driver in lane one doing fifty miles an hour in a seventy zone. In my experience there are a disproportionate number of these drivers of Afro-Carribean/African/Asian origin. Not only the slow drivers but also the simply bad drivers. Just this morning a car behind me on the A27 put his left hand indicator on every time he was overtaking?! When he overtook me I had a quick glance and guess what? I am certainly not saying that all bad drivers are coloured, just that a high percentage of them are. Is it only me that sees this?

I think when I'm 70 (sadly not too far off) I have to re-apply for a licence although unless there are medical grounds there's no re-test yet.

I don't drive and never have ..but my wife who is not yet 70 but as you say sadly not far off and she is far and above a better driver than any other I have been driven by and believe I have been driven by a huge amount of people.
she did in her previous life pass her advanced test and was invited to become a driving instructor.

Bearing in mind that we have amongst the safest (if not THE safest) roads in the world despite being an overcrowded little island, doesn't that say that we already have enough regulation and control on our roads/licencing? Or will some of you never be satisfied until everyone has had a police check and a licence retest every time they leave their own driveway? I'm sure there are other areas of life where time, effort and money would be much better spent.

Have you any idea what uninsured drivers cost those of us who do pay for it ? Have you any idea of how much revenue is lost to those who don't want to pay their car tax ? What's the point of punishing illegal drivers if they can just ignore their punishments and get away with it ?

I would be happy with more policing to cope with it and make law breakers pay for it, it would reduce the overcrowding on our roads for a start.

Further to Granny Weatherax's post I would add that it is so simple with modern technology to notify customs at all ports of outstanding fines, parking tickets etc and ensure they ae paid before leaving the country. Every vehicle leaving this country has to go through a port and or customs. If a lorry or car was impounded until a fine had been paid they would be paid very quickly.
