Pork pie land.
And bushy, seriously. I am not personally envious of any business making lots of cash. I'll be perfectly happy after uni in a £20,000 a year job. Ok so forget about the businessman comment. How about TESCO: Their success is built upon their manual labour workforce, without those guys then NO profits. And when you're a shelf stacker working your nakkers off for £5.80 p/h and your employer is boasting profits of £6billion every six months you might feel that you deserve more. So £7ph would make Britain a fairer society.

So how about £8, or £9, or £25? How much can EVERY business afford to pay without going bust? And how many people could they afford to employ at that rate? The problem with a minimum wage is not just the big companies making lots of money that it hits - it also hits small businesses, some of which may be currently making losses, but keeping going for the sake of their staff?

I totally see where you're coming from. Yes there are lots of businesses like you describe that don't turn big profits, and some that struggle to break even (which is tragic). Should they be hepled in times of recession, or go to the wall like the tories would prob prefer. Obvioulsy there is the banks issue conservatives wanted them to go bust, but labour bailed them out and are now close to turning profits. Soz i've vered of the subject.

But i think something should be done to up the minimum wage. I mean how can anyone run a house, bills etc in Brighton on £5.80 ph ?

This is typical labour. I would agree you can't live on £5.80 ph, but just jaking up the minimum wage could cause more problems that it solves.

But the comments that the Tories would prefer smaller companies go bust, is just crazy. Why?

Labour bailed the banks out? No, the public did. It was Labour who caused the banks to come close to going to the wall, so don't sing their praises for bailing them out.

From a news story - Mr Brown concedes that he bowed to pressure from the City to regulate the banks more lightly than he should have. “In the Nineties, the banks all came to us and said, Look, we don't want to be regulated, we want to be free of regulation.' And, actually... we should have been regulating them more. So I've learnt from that.”

But the reason we are in a mess is because of a worldwide crisis:shrug::facepalm:

I'm going down the pub

Unfortunately, that is the age old problem with Brighton. Lots of people want to live there, but there are very few jobs to go around, forcing wages down if people want to work.

In an ideal worls, there would be plenty of jobs to go around, and businesses would need to pay reasonable wages to attract staff. Market forces would dictate pay mening that employers would not have it all their own way, and the economy would be stronger giving businesses better markets into which to sell their products (because people would have more money to spend) and obtain greater revenues to sustain the higher wages.

Run along sunny jim, come back to talk to the grownups when you are old enough to have a valid opinion and vote.

We all go through our extreme politics stage, you look to be going through yours at this time. Don't worry, you will develop sensible views as you see more of this world.

In stark contrast to nearly everyone else on this thread, you have showed little humility towards anyone who is not a tory, parroting phrases about Labours faults without ever explaining what they were. I suppose by "sensible views" you mean vote tory, which I will never, ever do, and I find your comment on my age deeply patronising and offending: why does that mean I can't have a "valid" opinion?

Ha, so you're an opinionated snot nosed student?:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Yes, a thirty year old opinionated snot nosed student with a full time job. We all get one vote whether we are students, unemployed or even Prime Minister, my opinion is every bit as valid as anyone else's no matter what I am.

Once again, grow up.

Poncy degree that is no good to anyone at the end of it!

Right then I will defend my choice of degree against ignorant people like you.

You know those constituencies we just elected MPs for? How do you think the boundaries were selected? That's Geography, that is.

You know the EU that you hate so much? That's Geography that is.

You know how you do not like Brighton anymore because it has changed it's characterisitics? That's Geography too.

How about the roads you drive on? Where they go is decided by Geographers.

That convenient supermarket? Geography.

So, waste of time or are you just incapable of arguing with what I have said? So have to resort to petty points scoring.
