On my BMW, in the snow. When it is icy on the roads and the traction control is shouting, If you put the car into first, lift the clutch and DO NOT press the accelerator the car will engage and start to drive away and will continue.

This is really handy if your tyres are not gripping when pulling away using the accelerator.

seemly its only modern cars that do this ( older ones stall)

Give it a go...

That is so alien to BMW drivers, it'll never catch on

erm - every car that i have ever owned has been able to do that. Including a 1979 Ford Fiesta when i was 17. Older cars will not stall if you are gentle on the clutch. Fancy cars or money have nothing to do with it, it's about being able to drive.

no...my renault wouldn't do that, neither would my cavalier or vectra...my daughters peugoet doesn't do it either.. I had never heard of it, and I thought I would share in case anyone would like to try it...but maybe after 30 years of driving with not a point ever on my license I am "not able to drive"..

You are obviously a far better driver than many Bob...congratulations you must be very proud

The worst car to have in the snow. The long hold up on the A23 this morning at Handcross Hill was caused by 3 of them, unable to get up without being pushed.

I think in defence of all car drivers Doug, the vast majority of hold ups on handcross hill is lorrys broken down on their way up.g

Not this morning. There were even old dears in old cars getting up there with no problem.

Going back to the point are there any cars that do not move forward when in gear 1 and you take your foot of the clutch slowly ?

The science to this solution is to do with fuel injection and not type of car. Most modern cars with fuel injection will idle at 1000 rpm. When you slowly lift the clutch, the rpm will drop due to load on the engine, and the management system will automaticly adjust the fuel/air mix into the engine to return the revs to 1000 rpm. Hence the ability to pull away without using the accelerator.

If I start my Citroen C1 and leave it in neutral and gradually lift the clutch, the car will pull away even uphill.

I believe this technique was widely advertised on BBC news for use in pulling away in snow or ice.

I read the first post several times to see if i was just being thick and missing something he was saying but clearly not. It is called clutch control and i kinda presumed that everyone knew how to do it!
