What is wrong with these morons? Most of us are hoping not to get pay cuts, not thinking about asking for “big pay rises”. I can’t imagine how my boss would respond if I asked him for any sort of pay rise, let alone a big one, but the final answer will 100% be no. No-one at our place has had any increase in remuneration since before COVID, and for most of us 2 years before COVID, and there is absolutely no chance of one for the next 12 months at least.

"Pay restraint" and "Don't be greedy" never applies to Britain's £ multi-million bosses though, does it. It's only those front-line workers who actually physically do the work and create the wealth who are always being told not to be greedy or price themselves out of work, while their employers pay themselves millions.

Pay rise? I am a pensioner and although I receive the lowest pension in Europe we have been told no rise for the forseeable.
Here in Spain we have always moaned about the electricity prices but after hearing horror stories from the UK I think we may be fortunate. The Government here have reduced VAT on fuel. Didn’t know you could do that in the EU.

It's sickening. Bosses pay themselves £ millions, yet as we see on here, ordinary working people slag each other off for asking for a few quid more in pay, and accuse each other of being greedy for wanting an extra fiver.

The bosses and the Tories must be p*ssing themselves laughing at ordinary working people squabbling among themselves and insulting each other over a few crumbs from the rich man's table. Good old divide-and-rule.

This is why nothing ever changes and improves for ordinary working people - they're too busy fighting each other or hating foreigners.

Was told today, we are getting 3%, which is better than nothing, but given the rate of inflation, an effective cut in real terms.

Yep. That is what we are getting. First in a few years. Suppose accepting it will make me an enemy of the people.

Work in the public sector. Haven’t had a pay increase in real terms in about a decade. Won’t be getting another one for the foreseeable future. Only the pension keeping me there - and it’s now at the point that isn’t really enough of an incentive.

And occupational pensions are being cut too (as an academic, our occupational pension has been cut 3 times in the last 6 years): "Well, pensions have been cut in the private sector, so it's only fair that yours are cut too." The usual divide-and-rule and the race-to-the-bottom.

The reduction of VAT on fuel was sold as a benefit of Brexit. Ironically, its still here in the UK and removed in Spain.

On the wider point, there are a grand total of zero people on this thread who would turn down a pay rise because they'd be worried about the effects of Inflation. Whilst I only do recruitment in my job as an aside, wages for new recruits are going through the roof.

large pay hikes are inflationary, increase costs and wipe out the effects of interest rate rise. of course difficult for people think about that when they're looking at their personal costs going up. a reason for 20 years of low inflation has been keeping wage increases moderate from expanded labour supply, going to be tricky to contain now.

Not the exorbitant salaries and pay-rises of Britain's CEOs, it seems.

Bosses: "We want a £5 million salary". Sure, you deserve it. Here you are, no probs.
Workers: "We want a £5 wage rise" You greedy ****. Be grateful you've got a job, and stop causing inflation.

I am seemingly a lucky one in that case - no pension changes since 05 for me. Expect it’s likely that will change and they’ll come for that too soon enough!

1% to 8% for the rest, based on their placement in a 2x2 matrix, with the axes being a) objective measure of individual performance and b) more subjective measure of attitude/behaviour.

Added benefit: it’ll force the managers to tell individuals where they sit in the matrix and, if someone is low on either/both axis/axes, provide examples. You know - actually manage. They’re going to love that.

company making more money than ever so fully expect all staff to be looked after. In reality the standard will be 2/3% though.

Unless company losing money then disgraceful not to get a yearly increase and I'd move jobs if that was the case .

We've been offered 1.75%. Our 'real' wage is 25% lower than in 2010.

Unison balloted members on whether they would consider taking action. Only 1 in 7 responded.

So I guess 'we' are happy with 1.75%...

Assume we're in the same union. It's crap, but what's worse than 1.75% is nothing, which is what we've had this year, and we're now less than two months away from the next year with NI going up and new set of negotiations.

I'm sure 10ish years ago Unison refused 1% pay rises for 2-3 years and all that happened was we didn't get any pay rise

The charity I volunteer for has just put a pretty chunky pay rise through for all staff (but weighted towards to more junior staff) - way out of line with anything done previously. There is a drastic shortage of staff in the sector.

And make sure they call in the staff and tell them in ascending order, always. Managers who wouldn't/couldn't manage and avoided hard conversations always used to wind me up, it's your job FFS :thumbsup:

I would never dream of going to the bosses and asking for a raise..simply not the done thing IMO. However, my boss has given me a £10k pay rise over the last year which is going to come in incredibly useful with the prices of everything soaring.
Really feel for those not lucky enough to get that kind of windfall though - I've struggled for 20 years on a fairly low wage, and only recently have started to have a little bit of spare ££ every month, so know exactly how people feel.

A lot of complaints I hear are from those that have been in the same job for at least a decade+ and don't want to move up the chain. I have direct reports earning up to 85k for what I would consider middle management positions, mostly because of their tenure.

If you're complaining about your wage, have the skills and are confident in your own ability then challenge yourself to look for a promotion. It's simply not economically viable to keep on increasing salaries for a lot of roles because you'll hit the proverbial salary ceiling.

Health not the best.
Managing despite one of the lowest pensions in the developed world and despite the government effectively reducing it by ditching the triple lock they promised to keep.
I CAN’T ask for more.
