There is no denying that he is currently an asset to Russia given their gleeful response to latest developmements.

Whether being an asset to Russia is the same as being a "Russian asset" is obviously subject to debate.

If Trump was a Russian agent he would be doing stuff like driving a wedge between America and their traditional allies, assisting in getting putin the things he wants from the war in Ukraine, blaming Ukraine for the war, repeating Russian propaganda, destabilising and weakening the US democracy, FBI, CIA and other important US agencies, praising Putin, Keeping Nato out of Ukraine, Holding peace talks and not inviting Zelenskyy.

So, until any of this stuff looks like happening I am calling bullshit on the notion that Trump is a Russian stooge.

Yes, they were, but in a world where "helping out" involved "Lend Lease", which enabled the US to provide us with old gear at inflated prices and high interest (I simplify here) - however, we were very pleased to accept it at the time. I believe we finally paid off the debt in the 1960's, and of course we were even more appreciative as the war went on.

Lend-Lease was a loan scheme that was devised so that the gifting of equipment and supplies was in the defence of the US. They sent to the tune of $50bn to the allies ($600bn in today’s money!). The UK got $30bn of it, but wanted to keep quite a bit of stuff at the end of the war; of course a massive amount was lost or destroyed. So the Anglo-American loan was agreed at $3.75bn and it was that which was finally paid off in 2006.

Malaya was the first ship repaired in the US under the Lend Lease Act. It received a partial refit whilst it was there, gaining upgraded radar and additional AA guns - Grandad (CPO) told me the guns arrived before the plans as to where they should go, so they just fixed them where they thought they'd be most useful.

So not really the act of a neutral.

In practice what is the difference whether he is a Russian asset or not? If the stuff he does helps them so much it doesn’t matter if it’s accidental or because he’s an asset, you still get the same end result, stronger Russia.

If it were only that he were trying to stop the war you could argue he’d just got it a bit wrong. Stuff like dropping the sanctions against them, stopping the cybersecurity stuff against them etc can only actually benefit them, not the USA.
