Shock, horror…

Not a great thing. But you can't blame him really, is there any point in standing up for the rule of law and so on when the country has chosen the other guy who would issue a pardon like this to his own family without a second thought. In the end, Biden is just doing what the country has voted for.

Is anyone else surprised that the ability to pardon someone is still around in this day and age.

Sure it is hard for a political party to stand for law and order if their leader is willing and able to bypass the whole system and get people off at will?

Does this still happen in the UK? Apart from miscarriages of justice of course.

The Royal Prerogative of Mercy is still part of British law that can change sentences (not quash convictions) - Adam Turing was officially pardoned posthumously and the guy that saved members of the public on the bridge terrorist attack had his minimum sentence reduced further by Royal prerogative but it’s rarely used.

. . . and only for some good reason rather than your kids or cronies?

It's funny, because I'm sure I've been told numerous times that Joe Biden is a dementia-ridden, doddery, dribbling "old, broken down pile of crap" who hasn't got a clue what day it is or where he is, let alone have the ability to make a decision like that.

Who knew...? :lolol:

Or, more importantly, who actually cares? The game's gone and this is just par for the course in politics. Look after your own and don't go to the same efforts for the other millions and millions that you represent. Plus ça change and all that...

All of a sudden the Republicans are anti-presidential pardon? I wonder how long that will last.

Absurd power to wield in this day and age, but you'd expect nothing less from the greatest country on Earth (TM).

Shock, horror…

I thought the turkey had already been pardoned

I find it utterly bewildering that a nation such as the USA has a political system that is so clearly not independent of the judiciary. That judges are political appointments, and that presidents can do this.

The US government likes to present itself as the beacon of the free world when it really reminds me of an resurrected Eastern European state in the 1990s

I do wonder if this was based on a concern that post January, trump would make an example of hunter biden in a political witch hunt the like of which America has never seen before (copyright Donald j trump summer 2023).

So he is now pardoned and can't be revisited knowing that trump will pardon anybody amd everybody he can including himself (and his new pick for ambassador to france, his son in laws father who he previously pardoned)

Exactly this.

Trump pardoned his political allies accused of more substantial crimes than Hunter Biden when he was president. For Trump the law is for other people and his enemies not for him and his cronies.

I agree it's not a good look Biden pardoning his son, but the MAGA outrage is just manufactured pearl clutching.

The trouble is you can never tell whether he's just talking complete bollocks, winding people up, lying - or being serious. He has 'jokingly' talked about stuff that then happens - so how are you determining that this particular bit was a 'wind-up'?
It's called "testing the market".

Sadly, they can all now just point at this moment as the justification to pardon whoever they want to. Rioters (or "Hostages" as Trump calls them), Maga loons etc etc. It's a potential free-for-all.

Mental that it's even still a thing, but the President has ridiculous power that's essentially unregulated. If he wants to bypass due process, crack on

In other news, Trunp has announced the appointment of Boss Hogg of Hazzard County as new head of the US Internal Revenue Service. *

Also going by the name of Billy Long, an ex Congressman, his main qualifiction for the role appear to that of owning a realitor business plus being an auctioner with fast patter. As quoted by Trump; “Billy brings 32 years of experience running his own businesses in Real Estate and, as one of the premier Auctioneers in the Country.”

He also had another sideline business after leaving Congress - advising taxpayers how to navigate IRS tax regulations! Maybe Clarkson, Dyson and the rest in meltdown over their löopholes getting closed might tap Billy Boy up for advice.

* Younger readers who don't know who Boss Hogg is, ask your parents....

Biden's presidency started with him denying the existence of Hunter's laptop.
It ended with Biden pardoning Hunter for all the things found on his laptop...
Hilarious to see all the desperation to smear Biden via his son. All the"But, look at Hunter " stuff compared to the crimes, and misdemeanours commited by Trump and those around him is equally hilarious and sad.

By electing Trump it has shown that the ( very slight ) majority of Americans are racist, ignorant and gullible. When history is written of this time it will be endlessly analysed and the recurring questions will be how ? and why ? Incredible that a man so dysfunctional, crass, ignorant, and full of hatred and rage could rise to power TWICE !
