Scarves. Everyone had scarves on their necks or wrists when I first started going in 79. IIRC they were trophies.

70'S tbf alot of scarves around not always worn by the correct fans

When we played Arsenal in the first match in 1st Division, the thing you noticed most, was how many fans DIDNT have scarves, or colours, which made you realise fairly quickly, that all was not well in the North Stand... then it erupted

I seem to recall 1980 was still long hair, (or skin 'ed if you prefered) flares, Doc Martins and scarves on wrists, it was a year or so later when the WSF started going in the East terrace as opposed to the north and colours were dropped and fans started to 'dress well' for the match.

can recall 200 joining the train at haywards heath the train pulled in and was already pretty mobbed,must have been 500 TO 700 trying to get out at east croydon and the police were only letting small amounts out,on getting out the station the group i got out the station with were on our toes getting chased towards the whitgift centre,the march towards selhurst was as he said and recall 50 or so albion fans having to make a tactical withdrawal from the holmesdale,expecting a few hundred albion to have entered the home stand that day,can't find anything that he said to be exaggerated,the huge amount walking to selhurst meant that even when it kicked off you might be another 1,000 back and have no idea what was going on ahead or behind.That day was probably the peak of the rivalry that had been building since the friendly game around 73/74. Lets hope we never see the likes of it again

We went early to avoid the police...arrived at East Croydon station at around 10:00....grabbed by one of the line of waiting police and thrown against the wall and searched etc...wasnt even wearing any colours...just had to be off the Brighton train to be a target...was a very busy day

Don't ever remember Palace marching around Brighton those days, they got the train straight to Hove, If they did come into Brighton station there was probably a welcoming commitee ,now they sneak down west street and get wrapped up in an escort or drink miles away in other towns
