In The Premier League Era, excluding the 94/95 season when only 2 went up, the highest points totals for finishing 3rd have been:

Sunderland - 1997/1998 - 90
Portsmouth - 1992/1993 - 88
Ipswich - 1999/2000 - 87
Bolton - 2000/2001 - 87
Ipswich - 1998-1999 - 86
Wolves - 2001/2002 - 86
Norwich - 2014/2015 - 86
Derby - 2013/2014 - 85
West Ham - 2011/2012 - 86
Ipswich - 2004/2005 - 85
Derby - 2006/2007 - 84
Watford - 2005/2006 - 81
Sheffield United - 2002/2003 - 80
Sheffield United - 2008/2009 - 80
Swansea City - 2010/2011 - 80 (Cardiff finished 4th on 80 points also)

Swings-and-roundabouts though as Hull City went up 2nd on 79 points in the 2012/2013 season, for example.
Yep, we picked a shit year to do well. During the Championship years (last 11) the average total required for automatic promotion has been 84. It's going to be a bit higher this year.

If Middlesborough keep getting last minute goals and Burnley lacklustre wins then 90 may not be enough for us.

it was in answer to the original question
DOES ANYONE STILL THINK 87 POINTS WILL BE ENOUGH FOR AUTO
my answer was AS MANY AS POSSIBLE ..........................whats hard to understand about that

Very easy to understand. You are saying that you want as many as possible to be enough for auto. So you would prefer 93 to be enough for auto in preference to 89 being enough for auto? Why would you prefer that?

Who knows. I still pray for 2 Burnley defeats v Preston and Boro. Doubt it will happen though.
Personally it could be that we have the highest ever total for a 3rd placed club. If so fair play to all 3 sides for an incredible season of football.

I don't feel as confident as I did this time yesterday. See what Tuesday brings and Friday at Deepdale. I'm starting to get an Ol' Blue Eyes song in my head though..................

You're riding high in April, shot down in May...........................

It's possible we could finish on 91 and it wouldn't be enough because of GD.
It's possible we'll get 91, while Burnley have 92 and 'brough have 95 (or they both have 93).

Tuesday will have a big say in all this. I think the most optimum result is a Boro win. That leaves Burnley a little disheartened, and they have to go to Preston on Saturday. If they lost or drew that, the we can probably get away with 90.

All conjecture, of course - and we all know how good Burnley are at winning even when they are playing shit.

We simply have to concentrate on winning all our games - which of course is not easy.

We're needing a run like the one that got us out of Div3 in 87-88. The only way to ensure promotion is win 4 games on the bounce!!!
We might need a slightly better run than 87-88.

Preston v Burnley is on Friday night.

It could well be the pivotal match.
