This was the beginning of the end for Friday as his descent gathered pace. Never far from trouble, he was sent off after 55 minutes of this 4-0 thrashing at the Goldstone Ground for kicking Mark Lawrenson in the face. For good measure, he then entered the home team's dressing room and defecated in Lawro's kit bag. He never played another game of professional football.'

Not many centre forwards could get one over Lawro but I guess a kick to the face followed by a dirty protest counts.

I remember it. Big crowd. Non segregated and an 80 year old Reading hooligan. Reading fought back twice and then immediately conceded. Very unusual. Good view despite being full, but a very steep terrace and it was dangerous especially of the antics of the 80 year hooligan who pushed people and it had a concertina effect. I was bit flummoxed what to do as the aggravation occurred three times after we scored. This did not happen very often in away matches. It might even be the first time, I had seen us score three away.

Very aggravating place, comparable to the Old Dell, Fratton Park and Selhurst Park. Not nearly as bad as White Hart Lane though.

This Reading came was more memorable than an Easter Monday promotion encounter at the Goldstone, in the Goodwin era (from memory)

In the late sixties, when Aldershot beat Reading at the Recreation Ground, the crowd was an astonishing 18,000. We went there bog of the pitch in the next round and the attendance was 14,000+ almost entirely from the south coast. The 0-0 draw on the worst pitch was almost certainly the worst game of football I have ever watched. But the replay was one of the best for atmosphere.

Yes. I remember an exciting game in which Peter Ward was at his best. Ex-Albion Stewart Henderson played for Reading. Had a beer after the game at the pub nearest to the ground. Locals seemed amiable - in those days Pompey were a very bad side as well as being hooligans.

OT Didn't Kate Winslet grow up next to Elm Park?

At Elm Park Reading: Reading 2 Brighton 3 League Division 3 (now League 1)

Reading fan from Royals Rendezvous ‘in peace’, and anyway we lost that night, but what a great game of football! I seem to remember the score went: 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3. But can’t remember the goal-scorers now …
Brighton were top of the league at that moment, a ferocious proposition for Reading to face after some thirteen games or so, and you went on to get promotion (I think runners-up off top of head). You brought loads and loads of supporters that night, and we were intermingled in the ‘South Bank’ on a pleasant Autumn night (our favoured day then for mid-week games) but not a spot of bother – far from it, we had really great banter with the away fans. Perhaps the most fiercely competitive match for all the right reasons that I had ever witnessed as a Reading fan up to that point. We were enjoying life in the third tier after getting promotion the previous campaign and were sitting mid-table (little did we know then we’d go down again end of season by just a point).

So, just in case someone was there that night, please leave your memories on here!!

It was the first away game my dad ever took me to. My recollection (though hazy as I was only 11 at the time) was that we played in red. For some reason he'd got us seats in a small section of their stand which seemed as though it was reserved for visiting fans but there didn't seem to be any visible segregation. I had a great time as I didn't get to many evening games at that age and didn't usually get to sit down either. As I was small for my age being in the seats was a distinct advantage.

After the game we were happily walking away when some Reading fans came past and took my neighbour's scarf (we'd given him a lift to the game). As a somewhat feisty 16 year old he gave chase and returned about 10 minutes later with his scarf, two others (Reading ones?) and a few cuts and bruises.

all I can seem to remember is that there goalkeeper was called Death which as an 8 year old i thought was brilliant.

Good keeper too. Didn't he hold the record for the longest without conceding a goal until Van Der Saar broke it recently? I seem to remember his name cropping up then.

Sadly, it's Death by name and death by nature as he died quite young.

The true story is that his name was actually De'Ath - he had French ancestors, but got so cheesed off with everyone pronouncing his name 'Death' and not 'Day-Ath' that he finally gave up trying and just let Death stick!

That was the exception to the rule then - what struck me was the special banter we struck up on the Elm Park South Bank - think a lot of Reading fans had a soft spot for you after that game!

Another Reading player who stood out was Pat Terry,saw him at the Goldstone and he ran a third of the pitch to take the ball off Kit Napier who was two yards from the ball....nobody could take a corner like Kit Napier though!
