do you remember when he was in teh Aussie band Python Lee Jackson -

He did a nice turn on 'Ol Man River' and 'Rock My Plimsoul' (Rock Me Baby) with Jeff Beck. Was a bit of a Steve Marriott/Chris Farlowe wannabe until he found his niche with a good-time boozy band.

My favourite Rod rendition is probably 'I Could Feel The Whole World Turn Round' that he sang with The Shotgun Express. His first ever solo single, had a cool flip side 'Gonna Move To The Outskirts of Town'. Later solo stuff, 'My Heart Can't Tell You No' is decent, and 'People Get Ready' - both marvelous tunes.

Was that an Aussie band?? I thought it was something to do with the bloke out of The Nice, Keith Emerson's former band.

Strange that he didn't actually want that material released, for some reason.
'In a Broken Dream' was sublime, though 'The Blues' and 'Cloud Nine' did leave a bit to be desired.
I think the world is a better place for hearing that first one though.

Incidentally, he lived for a short period on a houseboat in front of The Lady Jane, over the Shoreham footbridge. I think that was just before he got slung out of France for bad behaviour. The same boat apparently got destroyed by the ob, because the inhabitants were smelly hippies that all the rich beachie types didn't like.

Difficult choice. High on my list would be 'Italian Girls'.

But it's true, he lost it with Atlantic Crossing.

You forgot to mention 'with Jeff Beck'. Have to say that Every Picture tells a Story was a brilliant album, doesn't sound dated at all to me. Maggie Bell (I think) from Stone the Crows was on the title track.

I really liked the 1st two albums after that he tunred into a caricature of himself and camped it to become a bit girly in his appeal.

His early stuff with the Faces was pretty good too if not quite as cool as Stevie Marriot's Small Faces
