Barnes and Dobbie play in different positions. Gus said Dobbie was bought to remove the reliance on Vicente. Therefore, why would Barnes be out?

I find it funny that with every new signing people assume Barnes will be dropped and yet there he is, week in, week out. When will people learn how integral Barnes is to our style of play?

If people just cast their mind back to Friday night and the move in the second half where Barnes headed the ball out of defence then chased down his own clearance and put through a great pass to CMS ending in a header saved in the top corner............. Could Dobbie do that? Would he ever be in that position on the pitch? I very much doubt that Gus wouldwant him to be,

Different folks for different strokes.................................

Why can't people open there eyes some times I'm afraid as we sign better players then current players will be dropped and I personal think dobbie is better than Barnes . Simple knob

Listen to what people have spent 3 pages trying to explain to you.

This isn't football manager or a computer game where you just say this is my formation, X player is better than Y player so he's in the team. They are all given specific jobs to do and have to play in a certain way. Dobbie may well get in at some point at the expense of Barnes but only if he has a dip in form or gets suspended or injured. If that does happen we'll probably have to change the system slightly because it isn't a like for like swap. Most likely they will end up on the pitch at the same time.

To just say I think Dobbie will replace Barnes shows a poor understanding of modern football.

Not sure that Dobbie is 100% fit yet. I expect that Gus will use the next 2/3 weeks to get all the new players 100%, giving them substitute appearances only before being integrating into the 1st team line up when we get an injury or suspension. Motivates the first team as well knowing that if their form drops there's someone there to take their place. Seemed to do the trick on Friday.

Why does Barnes cause such divided opinions? He's got a great record in the last two years and is a valuable asset who has room to improve. Surely he doesn't deserve some of the criticism on here.

As we improve, players who are good in one season/ league may of course hit their level. (i think Navarro and Elphick were recent examples.) I can't say whether that is likely to happen this season with Barnes, but of course it's possible. However he seems a very different type of player to Dobbie so they don't have to compete directly.
