... and the others in the same series - A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.

Works of the genius that is Sergio Leone.

This so true, the spaggetti westerns were the finest collection of westerns made and i can watch them time and time again, clint (or blondie) is great in his role and the music is just superb....

I always enjoyed the Italian made Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill spaghettis westerns.

They definately deserve a mention as they were fun pisstakes on westerns.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned "The Magnificent Seven". One of my favourite westerns.

Would have done if it hadn't slipped my mind. Shameful oversight on my part. Magnificent movie (as is The Seven sumurai, although I take Acker79's point about that one being a little on the too-long side).

I forgot to mention The Big Country as well.

I watched Seven Samurai a couple of days ago, which I quite liked, but thought it was a little long, but it definitely felt like a film that would work as a western (it's the film the magnificent seven reworked/remade)

The reason Seven Samurai would work as a Western is the director Akira Kurosawa was a massive fan of John Ford and his style was heavily influenced by all the Westerns Ford made with John Wayne.

So in a way The Magnificent Seven is really a Western based on a samurai epic based on a Western...

There is a story that when Hollywood was making the Pearl Harbor movie Tora! Tora! Tora! in the 1960s, Kurosawa was oiriginally signed up to direct the Japanese sequences because he had been led to believe his idol Ford was directing the American sections. Kurosawa dropped out of the project when he discovered the rumours were in fact just rumours... A shame really, imagine how great that fairly average war movie could have been.
