Taught/Coached direct relations of a couple of well known Sussex folk. Not mentioned but obvious from surname and then other people's conversations overheard confirmed. Nice kids at the time and not treated differently by their friends from what I could tell.

My cousin is married to a best selling writer /author who has sold north of 30m books.

I found out recently that I am also distantly related (we have to go back a short while) to a current Olympic gold medallist, same surname too, so I mention it all the time!! I have met her parents a couple of times, but not her (yet).

Was Porritt also disappointing?

Ha - no (well, he might be - I have never met him).

It was a pure guess, based on knowing loosely your field of work, and having heard various people in my past credit Porritt's writing having had such an impression. (My own degree was in Countryside management / Ecology).

My best FACT about Porritt, is that his father won a bronze medal in the 100m sprint at the 1924 Paris Olympics (behind Harold Abrahams of 'Chariots of Fire' fame).

At a conference I sat next to a QC at dinner time who is like a god in our world - one of the very best. It was lovely to find he was a great chap, warm, friendly and approachable - and funny. And even better, he told me about an article he had read recently in our professsion's magazine and how interesting he had found it. It was anonymous, because of it's content and identifiability if the author was known. The author was me! I was so made up.

I had a girlfriend whose cousin was in Eastenders. Since I don't watch Eastenders I had no idea who she was talking about when she told me.

Did your girlfriend look anything like this? If so her cousin was probably Shaun Williamson aka Barry Evans.

And at what point in your relationship did you come to the realisation you were punching above your weight?

Not exactly the same but...

When I was living at a student housing in Lund, I had a friend who worked at the music venue "Mejeriet" only a 5-10 minute walk away.

We had an agreement where I'd provide drugs and a place to chill to the artists. My friend was massively uncomfortable with drugs and that kind of stuff and we agreed to never talk about it (though admittely it has happened a few times when talking old memories).

At the time I had no idea who any of the people were as it was two years when I was 100% engaged in doing and selling drugs. You could have put Elvis in my room and I'd be too stoned to give a f***.
In retrospect it turns out I had a bunch of Swedish B celebrities over. My friends best memory from those days was bringing Sisters of Mercy to my room, which was locked, and then me screaming "leave me the f*** alone and take your band with you!".

No idea why I was so moody, but embarrassing to him as he was a fan (I've never heard them) + had told them to stay with me for half an hour while he sorted their taxi to the airport.

Only meet the guy maybe twice a year and in the first few years we didn't bring any of it up as he didnt want to - no mentions of celebrities, drugs, Mejeriet or my room - but now we usually share a few laughs about it despite me having like zero memories from all these Saturday nights.

My niece’s partner was in many episodes of Coronation Street, and still does a few odd acting roles. Despite being a northerner, we’ve converted him to the Albion. Not really discussed his career, though.

The sister of someone I know (knew really, haven’t seen him for some time) is married to Kenneth Branagh. It’s very rarely mentioned.

I met and hung out with fair few well know actors in my stunt performing days.

Without sounding blasé, it really isn’t that big a deal. They are just people you work with and nobody ever fan-boy’ed them.

Most of them were very nice people. Not all of them. But most.
