That's interesting, I sometimes wonder how I would be if I found myself in the presence of someone I really, really admired. I don't mean just oh look it's Timmy Mallet, but actually spending time with them.
I remember reading an interview with Steve Coogan, whose work I love, and he was talking about working with the Monty Python crew once. He said he spent a lot of time quoting bits of python at them, being a massive fan obviously. Funny to think of stars being fans themselves and doing stuff they might find a bit annoying to their heroes.

Three stories on that aspect:

I once attended a speech from an author who wrote some polemic books that basically led me to my career. I was very disappointed to find in real life they were nothing like I had imagined / hoped. A real wet lettuce.

At a conference I sat next to a QC at dinner time who is like a god in our world - one of the very best. It was lovely to find he was a great chap, warm, friendly and approachable - and funny. And even better, he told me about an article he had read recently in our professsion's magazine and how interesting he had found it. It was anonymous, because of it's content and identifiability if the author was known. The author was me! I was so made up.

I also had a few beers with Nicholas Crane once - and he was great as well. Really chattable to - but I guess it helped that I did the sort of work he was interested in himself.

One of my best mate's brother in law is Flintoff. Which he still finds weird.

My brother-in-law is world-famous and (I think) seen as the absolute best in the world at what he does (did). Problem is, it's so obscure that I've only ever met one person who has ever heard of him. Partly because I don't move in those kind of circles. I was with him when he got recognised in Waitrose in Haywards Heath though, so that was exciting.
