I taught, 30 years ago, the brother of someone who became a very famous actress, and we occasionally catch up for a chat, but in all these years I have never once mentioned his sister. Badge of honour.

Not quite the same, but I work in the arts and have become friendly with some pretty well known names - never talk shop though. Based on my experience, most of the time the last thing famous actors want to talk about is their work.

If you praise their work/show deference it can change a whole dynamic from a friendship situation to a fan one, and that just makes everyone uncomfortable. It can be hard when internally you’re slightly fan-boying out and want to gush about their performance or ask questions about the time they were in such and such, but it’s really not the done thing so it’s best to stick to the weather and holidays.

He said he spent a lot of time quoting bits of python at them, being a massive fan obviously. Funny to think of stars being fans themselves and doing stuff they might find a bit annoying to their heroes.

Yeah, it’s a really interesting dynamic. I’ve worked as a stage manager so it’s very strange being a fan of a performer, but also never letting this on when you’re a colleague with (nominally) equal footing in the stage and rehearsal space. I think the main thing I always remember is my credibility would be shot if I let on I was a big “fan” of someone. I imagine as per your example above, known performers get a bit more leeway on this front than mere crew - our priority is mostly to look professional I think!

My ‘circle of friends’ has the daughter of an incredibly famous actor. Only found out she was his daughter when I saw photos of them in a newspaper. I’ve never mentioned it because the context of that story was the Daily Mail being the Daily Mail about something private. She’s never mentioned it and I’m fairly sure most who know her don’t have any idea.
