I have an A-level in History, and have no idea who on earth they are.

Nor do i care.

Whislt it's always fun to mock the more afflicted amongst us, I think that rather highlights the folly of believing too much in the education system and the worth of basic academic qualifications. Most A-levels barely scratch the surface of their subject.

The Medici family were a very rich, poweful and important family from Florence. They provided patronage for many great artistic and scientific figures such as Michaelangelo, Galileo, Donatello and Leonardo Di Vinci(briefly, I think).

Adrie's claim to fame is a bit like being related to Guy Fawkes...

But if figures are to be believed then something like 10% of women have affairs and more men and some quite large number of children aren't the biological offspring of their 'parents'. All it needs is one tumble outside the marital bed some time years ago and all this family tree stuff is meaningless.

My Uncle Gary won a bronze medal in the Melbourne Olympics. He was a master angler and a massive huge bear of a man. His boat washed up on Bondi Beach after a weekend deep sea fishing trip, when I was about 7 I think and he was never found. My grandfather told me once he was one of the first to use the tumble turn in competition freestyle.

Here is his Wikipedia entry:

Gary Chapman

So, if that's a Medici in the middle of that picture, and Aids' ancestors tried to kill the Medicis, is he actually just trying to tell us that his ancestors were pest controllers?

Very possibly.

If you look closely you can just about make out his relative sneaking up on them...

My Uncle Len was in the Army during WWII, and was one of the original SAS. A book has been written about him.

Here is the synopsis from Amazon.

When Len Wilmott joined the Army as a boy soldier, corporal punishment was still regarded as a better way of dealing with defaulters than "jankers" or stoppage of pay; and it was still delivered with sufficient severity to demand the presence of a doctor. Wilmott suffered this indignity with fortitude and no apparent thought of writing to his MP. This biography describes how he came to be in Poland when the Germans invaded in September 1939; how he came to survive the next five years; his extraordinary adventures in Greece, in company with figures such as Monty Woodhouse and Eddie Myers; his experiences in Brittany at the time when the Allies landed in Europe, then in Holland (twice) - and a little-known side of the Arnhem battle; and his presence at the "liberation" of Belsen. After the war he became involved in bringing refugees out of East Germany, the Greek Civil War and the Malayan Emergency. Co-author John Simpson, whose own distinguished military service took him to many parts of the world, met Len Wilmott in Australia, where Wilmott eventually settled, and persuaded him to tell his story.

I actually find it a bit frightening that someone who's got a History A level hasn't heard of the Medicis. It's the sort of thing that provides ammunition to those people who regularly debunk A level results every summer.

As to the original question: my mum's cousin played rugby for Wales (just the once).

I'm more intrigued by the fact that one of the original directors of B&H Albion had my surname (and it's not a common one). I'd love to know if I'm distantly related to him...even if he did get done for illicit payments and suspended.
