We do need to strengthen and Bloom is a fan, he’ll know it. What if we don’t have the finances to spend 25 million or so? Do you expect him to just say “feck it” I need to shut B.W.2 up, I’ll just do it ? :lolol:

I expect him to do it to maximise our chance of avoiding relegation

Nobody has said we couldn’t do with strengthening up front, most of us just aren’t going to delude ourselves into thinking we can sign a proven PL striker, do you think its a wise financial decision to potentially outlay, say 30m on a striker when the club have had extremely reduced income for the last 6 months and for what looks like at least the next 6 months?

We should only sign a striker if its low risk IMO, Origi on a loan with option to buy would fit the bill.

Okay fair enough, but please see my point about minimising the possibility of suffering the enormous financial loss if we are relegated

I agree with you there ever noticed Liverpool for example spend £30m on a player and they get a player, the lower teams let’s say Newcastle as a prime example spend £40m and get a pile of turd. The top strikers from the championship are probably almost a safe bet. I can almost guarantee Watkins will score enough to keep Villa up again £30m well spent.

Yes, I’ve noticed that too, it’s gone on for years. Once a club is on a roll with a great set up (manager, good owners, winning team, sniffing around trophies), they experience a virtuous circle where players of true quality really want to join them, almost singling them out. We saw this with Fergie and the Wenger/Dein years. Alcantara and Jota choosing Liverpool for lower fees than Joelinton and Haller. Some lesser-sized clubs pay silly wages, way out of proportion to the club’s income, to attract players who would otherwise not look at them - CP paying Benteke and Meyer double our highest earners.

So many risks when you operate below the likes of trophy winning clubs. I can see why TB is so analytical and sensible. I wonder if Gold and Sullivan operate their club’s transfer business more off the cuff?

These aren't the players you're looking for.

So Melissa Reddy (Liverpool's favourite Journo) is reporting that the Jota deal is almost done.

If true I'd imagine that the Origi and Brewster transfers are also in place to finance it.

Won't be long now before the music stops and we get to see what we are left with, if anything.

WHU haven’t been financially managed well, look at them now

Sheffield United’s name always seems to be in the frame with those potential buys.

All this would be true if the club hadn't already bid £25million for Nunez. That shows a) The club has access to money it is willing to spend and b) They judge we need a striker.

Ergo, the cat is out of the bag.

Plus some here are forgetting we have also raised a fair chunk of change via players out. Transfers and loans.

In short, even with covid, one suspects we are able to sanction a fee for the right player, should he be available.

If ever a team were set to suffer second season syndrome, it would be them.

£41m deal for Jota agree with Wolves.

Now is the time for The Lizard to strike.

Let’s get Origi in ASAP (or Brewster).

Indeed. Thus we have attracted one worthwhile striker (from Argentina) in his 11 year reign. His analysis and sensibility has to reconcile with his stated aim of being top 10; not sure how that is attainable and sustainable without digging deep for that elusive 15+ player.

You’re a bit of a plum if you don’t think Neal Maupay is “worthwhile”.

Hmmm. Think I might stick with being a plum. Work In Progress I would say; his 10 goals last season were 3.6 below his Xg, far from where you want to be as a striker. And even if I suck damsons, two strikers in 11 years worth their shilling is hardly one to shout about.

Corrected for you. It is a fantasy that has a seductive sound but has proved to be bollox.

Sheff United are the epitome of a team that stays up due to novel tactics, despite its undinable shortcomings in quality. They are inherently susceptible to a backlash this season.

It doesn't take long for top coaches to work out how to counter new ideas.

With Everton and 6 others spending incredible sums, far outside our reach, that leaves just 3 places most seasons to achieve that top 10. I’ve always hoped that TB only meant it as an aspiration, a ‘corporate objective’. With Saudis and assorted other regimes or dubious individuals circling to buy clubs, it would be hard to achieve consistently.

A more sensible aim is simply mid table with cup runs. I see us potentially buying a centre forward for £25m max, hopefully in this window. Otherwise, any injury time out for Maupay could be a huge blow. I still have faith that the club are quietly working overtime on this.
