If you are going to Orlando and wish to visit Disneyland, you've got a hell of a long day trip!!:smokin::smokin:

Precisely!

First thing you need to learn is;

DisneyWORLD is in Florida
DisneyLAND is in California

:rolleyes:

I've stayed once in Kissimmee and once on I Drive. I Drive is nearer Sea world/Universal but it's 20 mins away from Disney. There is far more to do in I Drive and we found it better to stay there, but others will prefer to stay nearer Disney or actually on the park

First time I went was in Sept and it was bloody hot and very humid. 2nd time was in March and it was pleasant 70s and the parks were quieter. The 5 yo will love Magic and Animal Kingdom, but will hate Epcot. You'll find it less ardous if you go March to June rather than July to Oct which is hotter and rainier.

Costs depends on where you wanna stay, but whatever you spend on flight/accom, you will need double that again as spends. All meals are extra and you will be tipping left right and centre. Eat the massive buffet brekkie so you don't want too much at lunch. Then in the evening head to a steak house. The $ exchange rate means everything is half price as typically the price is the same in $ as it is in £

Buy your disney passes in Uk, and pre pay your hire car insurance here too. Don't book a package holiday but find the hotel you want and then book all the components separately

We did a week in March in a hotel in I Drive flew on Virgin and hired a convertible carfor £1200. The brochure price was £900 each for the same trip

Buy yourself a WDW guide book and read it before you go so you've a good idea of where you want to go. Disney is the size of Greater Manchester so it isn't somewhere you just amble around!

And don't plan to spend every day in the parks. You'll get park/queue overload. We did 2 days in park, 1 out to have a break. Plenty of cheap shopping and water parks to enjoy.

You have not been charged for this info but bring me back some duty free! :lol;

I went to Disney 24 years ago so any information I might have is WELL out of date. However I went to St Petersburg last May and that's a fabulous place. There's some lovely beaches just around the bay at Treasure Island, St Pete's itself is worth a good look round too. I went for the blues festival so I had other things to do but there's baseball at Tropicana Field which is a short cab ride up from where we stayed in the Hilton (OK OK but it WAS my honeymoon !). It's a good place to chill but if you've got kids there's probably not very much to do but it's nice just to sit in a bar, caht with the locals and watch the world go by

First up August will be extremely hot and humid but if you're prepared for that fair enough. You could do worse than take a look at the Embassy Suites Hotel Lake Buena Vista. Where this scores over Disney hotels is with the free breakfast. The rooms are bigger and better too. Factor in a nice pool and the fact that they sometimes project films onto the side of the hotel (nice to watch from in the pool and freebies) AND the 2 hour per night free bar (5 till 7). I've stayed there 2 or 3 times when we go down to Orlando for a weekend.
Other tips from a Floridian ex-pat Sussex resident - restaurants - you can't far wrong but I'd stay away from the really redneck places like Golden Corral. Chlli's , Applebees and Longhorn Steakhouse are all reasonably priced and ok - standard ribs , burger and chicken fare but on the whole probably a lot better than the equivalent chains in the UK. We like Cracker Barrel for breakfast.

As for the parks it's interesting but our friends from home prefer to stay away from some of them at the weekend citing that they're full of Americans. Weird.
We much prefer this to when they're full of Newcastle shirts and the like but
then we're all practically Yanks now.

As for chill out beach week why not head up the coast to the Jacksonville/St Augustine area? Couple or hours north of Orlando but relatively untouristy and the beaches are nice.
Jax has plenty of offer in the way of zoos , parks and there is even a non-league baseball team if that's your thing. Never bother personally but each to his own.
You might even catch some affordable pre-season NFL if the Jags are at home.

Hope this helps. Thought a local insight might offer a different perspective to that of a tourist.

Cheers.

Hey Billy Mays, Why would you want to avoid Golden Corral? One of the best value for money eateries in the Sunshine State.
Can,t imagine there being too many Rednecks around Orlando. The clienale would be Northern visitors and loads from over the Pond.
Bon Appetit.
