Well yes but can you describe Maupay as marking Lukaku? He's clearly got no intention of attacking the ball, which is what a marker traditionally does.

Other teams man to man mark. It's an option

He absolutely isn’t marking Lukaku….he’s there to block runners. Could be any of them depending on how they move

We can't prevent conceding more than 0 so it seems best not to try to reduce the numbers seems to be your philosophy. Great.

And I disagree that the failures are individual. They are structural, which I guess is difficult to admit if these structures have been implemented by someone on which you confer divinity. We've looked shaky all season and conceded plenty and probably are lucky not to have conceded more.

Got to admit i'm not dead set on man to man marking. I just think it can't be loads worse than what we're doing now. Probably if it were me, i'd take the blockers, who can't block so are basically out of the game and stick them on both posts. I think we'd have stopped a few of those we'd have conceded like that. I'd also stick Burn on the front post, where Veltman was, as a psychological deterrent to the taker from going near post. The would bring Sanchez more into the game.

Nope, just saying it is inevitable to concede goals. Each time a team concedes a goal on a corner people get upset about the defending yet not even the best teams with the best defenders and best managers can prevent it from happening. It is football. Sometimes you concede goals and you can work to concede less goals but it will always happen sometimes anyway. This season Brighton conceded 6 goals on set pieces, is a normal number - not great, not bad. It could absolutely be lots worse - just look at Palace.

While putting the four blockers + BDB at the posts (three at the near post and two at the back I assume?) would be very interesting to watch I think the opposition could abuse it.

I'm not necessarily against having players at the post (though BDB or any other giant is a terrible idea as Sanchez would usually see the ball trajectory too late too often) but it has advantages and disadvantages. The reason why most teams stopped doing it is mainly because while they might save a goal on the line every now and then, you also have less players in the box meaning the opposition over a season will be able to make more attempts. Its the same reason very few teams these days leave a man up front - the general rule is that the more players you have in the box, the less attempts your opponents will get.

Let’s be honest Maupay was a bit of an embarrassment at that corner. Never looked for one second he could stop Lukaku and then went down like a total minge once he’d been roasted

Its tactical genius!!
'Neal, you know how against Burnley, Tarkowski pushed you over like you were a cardboard cut out'
'Yes boss'
'Well first corner tomorrow you take Lukaku'

Brilliant performance, but I can't help but feel that without our ongoing weakness at defending corners we could have taken all 3.

Now it's totally fair to make the point that we were shorn of a lot of heading power last night. But look at this still. Are we really making the most of what we have? And the whole Maupay as a blocker thing? It's ended up in few conceded this season.

Personally I think it's time for a complete rethink. For example, they only have 4 in the box, would a man on the post for the outswinger not be an option? There's plenty of ours in there effectively doing nothing. Wouldn't you want your player you has the best chance of clearing (Burn) to be on the front post, or probably better, marking their best header of the ball? Is Lallana the player you would want on Rudiger if it had gone far post?

What a good photo. Reluctant to post as somebody told me I was wrong in saying Maupay was marking Lukaku but blocking him. Size for size had no chance of that. In photo Burn is not even looking at Lukaku and should be his job to stop him getting in a header. Veltman or Moder to do same on CB.
