Birmingham, Ipswich, Boro and now Leeds.

All games where we've conceded sloppy goals from outside the box because either the defence or midfield fail to close down the opposition quick enough to stop a shot.

Absolutely doing my head in! Sort it out Gus

Hard to criticise the best defence in the country. Can't keep everything out
Some people still manage it.
A dive (probably) for a penalty and an unsighted keeper. These things happen and they're certainly not the mark of a terrible defence.

Exactly. None of the goals conceded mentioned in those games were classed as sloppy goals. We are a Championship side in progress and some people's expectations are too high.
Watching highlights of games on tv must make some people think that games are played to that standard constantly. Even the very best teams concede goals.

Can't have it all ways. If we want to see a more open, attacking and pacey team (as I reckon most do) then the risk is that we leave holes and are caught on the counter. It was a poor goal I agree but it's the price I think we have to pay for taking our possession 30 yards further up the pitch and giving ourselves a decent chance of actually winning a game. Seeing Bridcutt in the oppo's penalty box was a delight!!

I never normally ask this, but did you actually go to any of those games or just watch the highlights?

Cause I don't remember any of them being "sloppy"

Leeds second goal was scored because no player closed down the scorer.

Take a look at all of the goals we have conceded from open play at home in recent weeks and tell me they could not have been prevented by someone closing down the goalscorer.

Anyone with any sort of tactical knowledge of football knows that you have to pressure the attacking players on the ball in the 5 yard zone in front of the penalty box.

On the same token rewatch the Leeds and Birmingham matches. What both teams defenders do is make it difficult for teams to score from long distance by dropping midfield players right in front of their back four. We don't do it.

If our midfielders did their job ad ensured that opposing players chances of scoring from out side of the box were limited then I'm pretty certain that the Ipswich, middlesbrough and Leeds goals would not have been scored.

It was caused by some nice build up interplay, a couple of lucky bounces and a deflection. Nothing to get het up about...

They did, but they came set up to do that with the hope of nicking one on the break which they did. An over simplification perhaps but we can drop our MF back to prevent them from scoring and sit out a succession of 0-0's ... I'd rather we did press up, leaves a few holes perhaps but at least give ourselves a decent chance of winning

Parking midfielders on the edge of the box to do what you describe is hugely negative football.

This is how teams line up against us but not how we should play.

There has to be a balance. Yes we should close down on edge of area but tp describe all the goals as sloppy is not correct.

The one last night was well worked with a slightly deflected finish. Buckley giving the ball away cheaply lead to it, not a failure to close down.

Did he though? Looked like the defender shoved him over - again!

Was glad to see WB get though the whole of a tough game though.

Forget the penalties we have another 1-1 draw and Leeds were shit, but then so are our 3rd division strikers

Harsh. We went for it which was something we haven't done since Wednesday (Sheffield that is) and my hope is that we get back to throttling the game like this and putting the oppo to the sword. Create the chances and they'll go in ... give Dobbie a decent run and we'll be more than a decent team imo

How would YOU stop deflected goals that give the keeper no chance, Kuz had that well covered before it took a deflection.? Seems to me that most of the goals we concede from open play are either deflected or excellent strikes. There is not a better defence in the Championship. I can't believe that there is still negativity after such a fine game.

We only went for it,as you say, because Leeds let us, that was the worst performance from any side visiting us this season.
