Oh dear. There are so many lefties and Greens on here.
I'm naturally right-of-centre on economic policy, left-of-centre social policy. And very much pre-environment. But I wouldn't class myself as a Green (with a capital G) by a long shot - I've never voted Green in my life, because IMO an awful lot of their policies are unworkable tosh.

Being pro-environment doesn't mean being lefty or Green. You can be right-of-centre economically and pro-environment, and there's a growing collection of people out there who fit that description. Growing number of "mild" conservatives around the world are starting to wake up to the fact that you can't have a perpetually growing & successful economy if the environment is f*^ked. A growing number of conservatives have realised that the future economy is in pro-environment technologies and industries and that just carrying on with the traditional fossil-fueled economy is a disaster waiting to happen.

The most curious thing..
If all new cars are to electric soon (when ever that is to be), will the charging infrastructure be in place in time

If gas boilers are to be replaced by something else, will the replacement technology be in place for everyone affected in time.

Otherwise, all these target dates are mere gesture politics, and mean nothing.

This is hilarious!

From the news conference:

Sunak is now addressing what he says are “worrying proposals” which have been made about climate change.

These include the “number of passengers you can have in your car”, an apparent proposal that people should use seven different recycling bins, proposals to tax meat, or new taxes to discourage flying.

After reading out each of these, the prime minister says “I’ve scrapped it”.

____

So, Sunak is scrapping policies bought in under his own government! Eg, recycling.

And the measures proposed required all councils to collect paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, glass, garden waste, and food waste separately. They did not demand that all householders have 7 bins, that was the right-wing press spin.

So Government policy is now to link the cost of living crisis directly to taking action on the climate crisis

This is very dangerous.

If he actually had a plan on other green initiatives this wouldn’t be so bad but he doesn’t

Whilst not the serial adulterer and liar of Johnson, I’m starting to think his policies might actually be worse.

An utter tool and environmental criminal and a word described by Geldof to describe Brand I won’t repeat

Yes and Yes.

If you set the aggressive targets and industry lines up to meet those targets - which it has - then it will be in place.

Sunak has just pissed business off by pandering to the right wing of the Tory party.

When will people realise that UKIPers like Tory MP Craig Mackinlay and hedge funders like Rees Mogg are intent on leading this country to destruction. Everything they do is regressive. They have never done anything that remotely positions this country as a world leader in anything. They have diminished our standing and Sunak is sucking their cocks!

Worry ye not, Starmer is just around the corner.

We'll have millions of charging points for all folk, including those in flats and apartments.

He'll have it done by 2030.

The Conservative party is spinning so fast, it's disappearing up it's own arse, with all the added flatulence and methane emissions that that brings.

Oh dear. There are so many lefties and Greens on here.
Well there are two reasons for that.

The first and most obvious one is that this is a site for fans of Brighton (one Labour MP, one Green MP, current Labour council, former Green council) and Hove (one gay, Remainer, Labour MP) Albion. You're more than welcome to offwardly f**k and support a side with a less woke political representative.

The second reason is that you're very reactionary and appear to be to the right of Liz Truss.

You're also very old so won't have to deal with much of the fallout.

Does anyone else find it bloody typical that the reason they are using for allowing oil (combustion engine combust from oil products) cars and gas boilers for longer because of the cost of living crisis that was caused by the cost of…..oil and gas.

No matter what we do ****s will always ruin it.

So, if I understand this right, Sunak's reason for f***ing the planet over is that he has already f***ed the economy over and that doubling down will somehow help

There's no doubt that the last remnants of the terminally naïve will buy it :lolol:

Ford UK not happy. Bloody woke corporate multinationals.

Judging by the amount of press releases/statements that have arrived in my inbox since he gave that bizarre speech, almost no-one in the automotive industry is happy!

My hunch is that this is nothing to do with a cost of living crisis or feeling sorry for the people who 'can't afford new cars'. Those people can't afford new petrol or diesel cars, either! More likely they realised they'd facked up by overpromising 2030 and shifting from the EU's 2035 so had to hastily backtrack and added on a load of measures to the announcement.

Trouble is, a lot of the industry (fleets/businesses, anyway) is on its way to transitioning to EV and it would take a big effort to divert from that. So all it does is make Sunak (who appeared to be reading a bedtime story, not a major policy U-turn) look like a chump.

I love the way that Sunak has plucked some figues out of the air and they are now being touted by the media as savings for the poorest.

You won't have to spend £25,000 on an electric car and £15,000 on a boiler. You're £40,000 up.

You never were going to have to spend 40k anyhow!

Most people have purchased fairly new cars on personal contract plans and an electric car via Cinch will cost you £42 per month. A Nissan Leaf costs £12k.

The average cost of a car in the UK ranges from £12,000 to £28,000, depending primarily on the size, spec and car make and model. The average household spends roughly £1,100 a year on car purchases and financing, representing 4.3% of their annual family budget.

He is LYING and SPINNING to everyone. At least you could see Johnson lying. Sunak is smarmier!

Has Rishi introduced any new policies to incentivise industry/companies/people to move towards net zero in a fair path that brings people along, or just kicked the ball into the grass?

BUS grant for boiler->ASHP is now 50% more (So 7.5k towards ASHP, and assume 9k for GSHP) - Also talked about more support for insulation schemes..

Funny how everybody loved him when he was dishing out money during Covid
Everyone? Are you referring to the everyone who still loves Johnson?

I can't recall who I loved during Covid, apart from family and friends. It certainly wasn't the tax-sheltered gimp Sunak

Another nail in the coffin of the UK...what a craphole we have become in the last 13 years. Sunak and the Tories offer nothing but decay, despair and destruction.

EV users will be able to give a clearer picture.
ASHPs are relatively low-tech. Have a look at the rapidity that they're being rolled out across the EU. France is doing so at 10x the rate of the UK, and this will in all likelihood increase. This rapidity is due to subsidies, clear targets, and a consistent plan. You won't get any of those from this lot.
