Oh dear. There are so many lefties and Greens on here.

I'm naturally right-of-centre on economic policy, left-of-centre social policy. And very much pre-environment. But I wouldn't class myself as a Green (with a capital G) by a long shot - I've never voted Green in my life, because IMO an awful lot of their policies are unworkable tosh.

Being pro-environment doesn't mean being lefty or Green. You can be right-of-centre economically and pro-environment, and there's a growing collection of people out there who fit that description. Growing number of "mild" conservatives around the world are starting to wake up to the fact that you can't have a perpetually growing & successful economy if the environment is f*^ked. A growing number of conservatives have realised that the future economy is in pro-environment technologies and industries and that just carrying on with the traditional fossil-fueled economy is a disaster waiting to happen.

If all new cars are to electric soon (when ever that is to be), will the charging infrastructure be in place in time

If gas boilers are to be replaced by something else, will the replacement technology be in place for everyone affected in time.

Otherwise, all these target dates are mere gesture politics, and mean nothing.

These include the “number of passengers you can have in your car”, an apparent proposal that people should use seven different recycling bins, proposals to tax meat, or new taxes to discourage flying.

After reading out each of these, the prime minister says “I’ve scrapped it”.

So, Sunak is scrapping policies bought in under his own government! Eg, recycling.

If you set the aggressive targets and industry lines up to meet those targets - which it has - then it will be in place.

When will people realise that UKIPers like Tory MP Craig Mackinlay and hedge funders like Rees Mogg are intent on leading this country to destruction. Everything they do is regressive. The second reason is that you're very reactionary and appear to be to the right of Liz Truss.

Does anyone else find it bloody typical that the reason they are using for allowing oil (combustion engine combust from oil products) cars and gas boilers for longer because of the cost of living crisis that was caused by the cost of…..oil and gas.

Judging by the amount of press releases/statements that have arrived in my inbox since he gave that bizarre speech, almost no-one in the automotive industry is happy!

My hunch is that this is nothing to do with a cost of living crisis or feeling sorry for the people who 'can't afford new cars'. Those people can't afford new petrol or diesel cars, either! More likely they realised they'd facked up by overpromising 2030 and shifting from the EU's 2035 so had to hastily backtrack and added on a load of measures to the announcement.

Trouble is, a lot of the industry (fleets/businesses, anyway) is on its way to transitioning to EV and it would take a big effort to divert from that. So all it does is make Sunak (who appeared to be reading a bedtime story, not a major policy U-turn) look like a chump.

You won't have to spend £25,000 on an electric car and £15,000 on a boiler. You're £40,000 up.

You never were going to have to spend 40k anyhow!

EV users will be able to give a clearer picture.
ASHPs are relatively low-tech. Have a look at the rapidity that they're being rolled out across the EU. France is doing so at 10x the rate of the UK, and this will in all likelihood increase. This rapidity is due to subsidies, clear targets, and a consistent plan. You won't get any of those from this lot.
