I'm deaf in one ear, yet bizzarely work in subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing. All the signers here are deaf and use BSL (obviously), so I really should get around to learning it. Also a good idea if the other ear gives up too. If anyone can recommend a good place to learn it in London or maybe an online course as I work very variable hours, that would be great.

I was going to learn at Greenwich Community College. Relatively cheap compared to most courses. But my lecturer died and there was no-one to replace him! Moved out of London and enrolled at Sussex.

Which borough are you in?

can i ask if you are deaf yourself? or are you just learning sign?

I've got about 10% hearing left, up to 40% with hearing aids and a cochlear implant in October, but learning to sign as it will definitely help.

Funnily enough, I chased after a girl in Preston Park, as I spotted her hearing aid. Her first language is BSL and we have been dating, so that will definitely help!

Prices for signing are pushed up by hearing people learning as it is a bit of a money spinner (apparently)!

My son is Profoundly deaf and a BSL signer. I learnt sign to chat to him. Lucky that, as I am now losing my hearing. We are and have been season ticket holders for years. We are always glad to meet fellow signers particularly those of an Albion persuasion. We always have fun with the Albion and fellow supporters. One great occasion was at Norwich a few years back when we had a couple of rows of supporters singing and signing albion songs. So all who learn to sign welcome and do stop us for a chat. We are in the East Stand row H near the half way line, just look for the signers!:bigwave:

You probably sat in front of me at a sunny game in Withdean. A blonde haired son? I was going to say something, but didn't want to complicate things mid game.

I've just taught myself the alphabet and it is all very exciting! I'll have to improve my skills before speaking to you both!

Hi,
At withdean we sat in various locations but mainly the family stand. Son used to be curly fair haired, not blonde, but now brown. Whilst I have rather lost the thatch if that's a clue. Starting with the alphabet is good and then move on to simple greetings. Gradually you can build on this. When I was learning one confusion was the regional signs. Just as there are regional accents in the hearing world there are variations in the deaf world. Hope you are able to learn more, it really helps to have more signers and reduce the isolation of the deaf. Anyhow certainly look out for us around the Amex. Mal

I'm moving to Brook Green in a couple of weeks. Problem is it's very difficult to commit to evening classes and the like because the shifts I work are often very late - we can finish at midnight or even beyond. But all the same any info would be appreciated and maybe I can figure something out.

Another deafo here totally in one ear
Was told not to participate in boxing and diving as a kid to avoid risking hearing loss in the other ear
I am extremely fortunate to hear in one ear but totally oblivious to anyone talking to me on my right hand side
Many a time have people assumed me to be an unsociable bastard after not responding to them
However can also use this minor disability to my advantage having selective hearing

Agree with all of this (apart from it's the left for me). Was also advised to avoid mountain climbing due to my balance. Bang went my dream of being a champion mountain climber.

My days of being in the army were numbered pretty quick too
Big disadvantage is not hearing jack in a restaurant or in a pub, if i'm in a large group I steam over to the furthest right-hand side of the table and plonk down otherwise would end up being a lemon all night and feeling awkward, lots of alcohol in my case does tend to relieve this though

Do you sign the chants? That would be QUALITY. I reckon we could all manage an AL-BI-ON, Al-BI-ON.

I Have searched an online BSL dictionary but found no sign for Albion it would have to be finger spelling A-L-B-I-O-N. But I will check with my friend who is thoroughly bi-lingual if she is aware of a sign for Albion. (It is possible as BSL has dialects much like any other language - Brighton signing differs slightly from London signing)
Just as an aside even though I am from Yorkshire I speak BSL with a Brighton accent :lolol:

Mrs Coach

aka Jesus H. Woman
Hearing difficulties as a child and learned BSL one and two in Eastbourne with Linda Skinner. Excellent teacher, profoundly deaf herself. Also learned deaf-blind sign and accompanied an Usher Syndrome friend on holiday as a voluntary guide and communicator several times. A lot of the other guides were deaf - so I found myself at the front of the coach during one trip, translating the holiday reps chat to the deaf guides so they could translate to their deaf-blind companions! Surreal! Little Coach has undergone 6 ear operations for his hearing, including a re-build (hence he calls it his 'bionic ear'!) - nothing to do with my deafness as a child, just a co-incidence. He learned to lipread really well though during periods of very bad hearing loss. Could tell you a funny story about how he learned his first swear word after an ear operation at a Sunday football match when his Uncle forgot he could hear again, but then I'd just get cross with you again then wouldn't I, Uncle Graham?!!!! ("I saw a *$*%ing great goal today Mum"!)

Ha ha.

Do we have loop at the Amex? I am sure it was mentioned in the original plans, but Insider served the question.

Ned I am about to start level one. Do you have any recommendations for decent reading materials and/or aids?

I used to take deaf kids to school. They taught me some basic sign language - only the swear words though.

Has anyone discovered the t-loop system at Amex? I am sure one would supposed to be fitted?

Thanks for the offer. I start at Sussex Uni (Level 1) on Monday.

Oh and I seem to have a spot on Wednesday for a Cochlear Implant operation in Chandler's Ford - eek - If anything is to happen to me, will someone let Gus know that I loved him with all my heart.

I've recently joined B(oozy)S(ign)L(anguage) - it is a drinks night at the Bees Mouth in Western Road. The next one is 17/11 from 8pm. All levels of sign and not sign are welcome. Great fun was had at the last one. GET INVOLVED. We can think about forming an Albion splinter group if there are enough to be had.
