Just far enough away from LDC
"Before Marseille's opening game of the season, Robert De Zerbi used a projector to display a blurred-out contract offer from Manchester United in front of his squad.

He told his players: “This is where I could have been, but I put my passion before money. I came to Marseille for the passion." [L'equipe]
That's a bit clever borrowing that contract offer from Greenwood :)

He loves drama doesn’t he?

Would love to know if that’s true. Also, Man Utd had a manager so not sure it is.

Some things I am loathe to get judgemental about. Roberto was high maintenance but when fully firing gave us brilliant football. He obviously found it difficult to keep the energy high when things started to slip away. That's who he was and frankly the only thing that suprised me was how little drama was involved in his leaving. I was expecting a Poyet sequel. He took Brighton to new heights and left at the right time.

What I cannot forgive is/was his attitude to Mason Greenwood. For that he is dead to me and I hope he loses every game forever.

Potter leaving us for Chelsea was a kick in the bullocks, but it's only a game and I got my frustrations out when we played them the first time. T'was cathartic. He seems like a decent guy at heart and hope he does well in the rest of his career.

He would have been jumping in the crowd last night and yes we would have loved his passion. Then again a small fist pump from Fabian and it’s only three points makes him a lot cooler in my book.
Different characters that’s all no need to slag RDZ he was fun while it lasted.
Both RDZ & Fabian say they play for the fans we are the most important factor of any club, not like the history teacher who thought it was all about him.

Reminds me of some of the games under RDZ, we were either sublime or utter gash. Everton at home and Luton away spring to mind when watch these Marseille highlights.

As Brighton fans, we accepted these blips with fairly good grace, with a, “it is what it is” attitude. To be fair we normally bounced back the next game.

Marseille fans are a little less understanding 😂

The more I see and hear of post-Brighton RDZ, the more I’m glad he left when he did. He’s the type of coach who can bring short-term success, but will inevitably leave (potentially lasting) damage in his wake.

FH feels far more sustainable and a better fit for the club, though was delighted with RDZ’s first season. Well done (again) Tony for gently steering RDZ out of the manager’s seat at the end of last season.

I agree.

Further, I’d love to know exactly when Tony decided enough’’s enough.

True, it didn’t suit TB & PB although was he wrong? He said to keep the season alive we need 3-4 quality signings in January he got handed the prospect Barco.
None of us know what really went on behind the scenes although he wasn’t backed really in any transfer window whilst he was here. That probably would have pissed off many coaches who had achieved European football for a club like ours knowing how much the club had banked in player sales.
It’s one thing thinking this, another to repeatedly go on about it to the press. This was disrespectful, unprofessional and also undermined the team. The worst was that he seemed to give up when the club didn’t break their model when he didn’t get his way, a model which was fully explained to him from the start and a model which he signed up to. Most people would be out on their ear if they carried on like him in any other job.

Lack of patience and long term vision as well. Was only 9 months ago he was publicly criticising Baleba and now look at him after some nurturing. I don’t think Roberto had much patience with youth either which seems an oversight when hiring him

Fab probably can’t believe his luck

Feeling more and more like Fab is yet another manager upgrade.

I think it was @Guinness Boy who said Fab feels like a mix of the best bits of Potter and RDZ. It really does feel like this.

We all know that RDZ wanted (and probably needed) more players due to all injuries. But they are not easy to find in the January window, especially with Euro 24 ahead. And to bring in players just for the sake of it is not the way Tony work I suppose. Add to that the RDZ way of play, it's not something you learn in a week or two, I'm not sure it would have helped that much.

In addition to your question Herr T, I'd also like to know if Tony asked RDZ to be patient and wait for the summer transfer window to get his players in (considering Euro, FFP etc)? I guess Tony already had a plan to spend some money in the summer, on the right players, not some January quick fix. I mean you just don't come up with the idea to spend that amount of money in July, Tony must have had a plan! Did RDZ get this info and "turned it down"? Or had Tony already made his mind up that RDZ wasn't the way forward and decided to keep quiet about it and more or less "let him sack himself"?

Or was it just the way that a 3-1 or 4-1 win one week could end up losing 6-1 or 3-1 the next? Tony is a gambler, they don't like things like that.

Back to work!

Yes, Baleba was thrown under the bus after a game last season(can't remember which game) but Roberto blamed him. However, didn't Roberto also say Baleba will make the club a lot of money in a few years?.

If he wanted 3-4 quality signings in January then yes, he was wrong. You just can't get 3-4 quality signings who are ready to go in January. It's a lot easier to get players in the summer and it also takes time getting players to the level we need.

None of us know what really went on behind the scenes although he wasn’t backed really in any transfer window whilst he was here.

He got a couple of players that he wanted and they weren't good enough. We lost a couple of big players but he knows that couldn't be stopped, and I'm sure he was told (if they wanted to keep him) we'd be investing in the summer, which we did.

Which I think we can now see as a subtle dig at the board
