I would suggest you start by going to your doctors as they should be more than willing to help you either by advice or more practically. I had to loose weight due to medical reasons & my doctor was fantastic. She did prescribe statins (a drug that reduces the absorption of fat from food) which are often used to help diabetics with weight control. If your doctor is willing to prescribe these (which may be iffy given your heart condition) they will only give you enough for one month at a time as they have to monitor you.

Hope this helps and all the best with the weight loss

Thanks Ned, my GP has ben very supportive, over passed years since my daughters death and my slide back into alcoholism. Am seeing him prior to angiagram so will talk further with him

Phew
will print that tome off and digest lol, not literally of course. many thanks for your response mate, appreciated. Will get there i am sure. Happy new year

Cheers

Just a p.s. but worth mentioning; fat can be like an addiction, so expect some withdrawal symptoms. It WON'T be easy, you will have cravings.
If you suffer the occasional setback, you are human - accept that and make sure you are still going in the right direction ultimately.

Remember you are fighting for actual life here, survival.
People die of natural causes - but that still means something killed them!
You want 'natural causes' to mean many more years from now - not within the next couple of years.

So yeah, keep us posted - this is the 'good health quest' thread!

Happy and successful new year to you too

Yeah definitely agree. Drinking lots of water helps fill you up so you don't feel hungry. Keeps you healthy to :)
Light walking is good, start off with slow and short walks then gradually increase the length and pace of the walks:] it works!

Good luck to you :]

As said this is a great thread.

I too have for the last few months been on a lose weight mission, but have very little knoledge of body mechanics and biology.
But have taken the common sense aproach.
I was 13 1/2 ( now 12 1/2 ) stone and have a noticable stomach although i don't drink.
At 5' 9" this weight is bordering on being obese acording to the NHS BM I calcualator !!!, and need to get down to 10 1/2 to be a healthy weight.

I deceided i wanted to be thinner and less bulky without actually dieting.

What i have done is cut out the crap, burgers, cakes, chocholate crisps etc.
And now walk the dog for and hour in the morning and again an hour in the evening each day.
And eat just twice a day. Breakfast and dinner in the evening.
Is this wrong ? should i eat more often ?
and what is the impotance on drinking water ? is it just to supress hunger pangs ? or are there other benifits to it for losing weight.

Really good luck with the weight loss. I complete a year tomorrow of no alcohol at all. Have done it for sponsorship which really helped me keep focused on it.

Unfortunately stopping alcohol did not take off weight as I just substituted with food, so am now looking to lose weight this year. Am currently 17 stone and would like to lose at least 3 stones this year.

I really wish you good luck and as NHM said don't be too down on yourself if you slip occassionaly.

Sounds you doing great mate. I know little about the water side of things but i always have known its beneficial, as it is pretty much always spoken about. One thing that i fell foul of was the way people pictured you wejght wise, because of my build and height hardly anyone could guess my weight, in fact no-one got within 4 stones of it. nice to be told "you dont look that weight" but was always a get out clause for me

NMH, that's an awesome post!

Thankyou. I admit I cut it and pasted into a notebook file myself.

Incidentally, my old flatmate from 30 years ago called from Germany a week before Xmas. He is 52, and just suffered a heart-attack. The docs caught him in time, and put a stent in to keep whichever artery open, as that's what had happened to cause it.
His symptoms were, basically, a spate of what he thought was indigestion that wouldn't go away.

His issues are; stress - he holds stress in (exhibits very little outward emotion). Diet - 'a bit' overweight over a long period of time, combined with ZERO exercise. Booze - drinks heavy beers, fairly regularly - not to get bladdered, but he was definitely a little bloated by it. (alcohol is deceivingly high-calorie and will ruin a good diet).
Now, he has clearly suffered a bad drop in his self-confidence, and his general feelings of security. He sounds shaken, and stirred.
Once a person suffers a heart attack, the job at hand is suddenly much greater than before, and psychologically that's got to have a pretty big effect.

The trick will be when eating healthily isn't an effort but simply a way of life that you don't even notice. I think that's why NMH's post is so good - it gives an idea of what it's like to be a healthy eater without feeling like you're on a diet.

Wishing you every success highway61 and anyone else who's trying to change the way they eat.

Hello mate, good to meet and chat last week

Erm... there are more benefits, apparently, to eating small and often, rather then large and seldom.

I don't know the details about water totally - but I believe that your body copes better with expelling fat from cells, and with supplying the right balance of blood around healthy organs - as well as flushing toxins and salt/sodiums.
So - cutting down on fat, salt and toxins, with raised water intake to help get rid of existing ones - has to be healthier. Plus, the suppression of hunger is a definite big plus!
As I mentioned before - we often can mistake thirst and hunger, and head straight for the junk when it was liquids we needed all along.

Well iv always been told to eat 3 meals a day but healthily rather than just junk food.

The average person's body is made up 60% to 70% water,

Got this little peice from a website:)
"How much should I drink?
Most people should drink at least 7 to 10 average sized glasses of water each day. Many people do not drink enough water and the consequences of this can be severe. People often think that drinking cups of tea, coffee or even alcohol makes up for not drinking water. This is incorrect. Instead of quenching your thirst these drinks can actually make you feel more thirsty."

this is true, loads of people don't drink enough water, but don't realise that when they drink water it dilutes the salt in your body so it is very important in our diet. fruits and veggies have high water concentrations so even if you don't like drinking water, eating fruit can contribute towards your daily water intake.

when exercising drink plenty water because when you sweat, you lose water, and to continue to feel good and get the most out of your exercise, you need to make sure you top your water levels up :)

i dont know every little detail about drinking water and all that, but i always get nagged about drinking water cause i get a sore head if i dont drink enough hehe.
hopes this helped a little bit!

until all the further tests are done, its been diagnosed as unstable angina. Wich i am told means that it can come at times when you are in fact resting. I have the usual spray, and beta blockers, plus something for high blood pressure. I guess i have been in rehab for drink 7-8 times during my life, but somehow managed to hang on. The irony is that I spent 10 years in the substance misuse field1 (must say was sober most of that period, off and on) am also a qualified counsellor, though no longer practising. When Claire my daughter was murdered i think a number of people around me thought that my counselling experience would see me through the early months after her loss. But its a case of "Physician heal thyself" and dont work that way. but i have had great support and have been working for a year now at a project that makes good use of my work experience, and hope to return to work in not too distant future.

Atkins is the easiest and best diet ever. Its basically a diet designed for men I think. I lost 3 stone in 4 months and all I ate was meat and cheese. I drank as much whiskey and vodka as I wanted too.

You are never hungry and its easy to stick to. If you have never tried it, I highly recommend it - there are also lots of support boards for Atkins and I have to say ive never come across someone who has tried it and it not worked for them

I have been dieting for about 2 months I have lost over 1st. How I did was simple. Cut out the crap foods and go for a low fat diet. Swap bacon sandwiches and scrambled eggs for weetabix, swap crisps, pasties for fruit, swap white bread for Nimble bread. I also walk every evening for about 30-45 mins as well, and this is working for me.

Each to their own, but I just cant see how the Atkins diet is a healthy way of doing things. And once you stop it, will it just have the reverse action?

Fool proof diet plan.

You will get the best results by...

firstly. follow a strict calorie controlled diet but you'll have to work out your idle metabloic rate based upon your size, current weight and age to work out how much you should be eating. You can work this out here. BMR Calculator

Follow the link to this page. Harris Benedict Equation You can work out how many calories you need depending on how active to are.

It's never going to be 100% acurate but it's certainly a decent guidline.

As long as you can manage to keep within your calorie allowance and eat a balanced low(ish) fat diet in time you will reach your more natural body weight.

Secondly. If you have any hope of meeting your target you are going to have to exersise 3-4 times a week to lose your exess weight. Without being rude, you're a big guy so I really wouldn't reccomend jogging or anything too demanding but just walking briskly for 20 minutes 3 or 4 times a week to the point where you get your heart pumping and your breathing picks up.

Best of luck, if you stick to a plan you will definetly do it.

I am in the same boat as you are '61 and need to lose about the same amount . One thing I struggle with is keeping track of what I have drunk/eaten so I have started using this ...

FutureSelf

It makes things easier and seeing it written down can be a real eye opener. Too early for me to reccommend it but I am giving it a try ...

Good luck fella

Giving up alcohol and sticking to Paul McKenna's rules worked for me - two and a half stone since August:

1. Only eat when you're hungry

2. Stop eating when you're full

3. Chew every mouthful very slowly

4. Eat what you WANT to eat, not what you THINK you should eat

Keep on keepin' on
