Quite agree. Orlandi is not a box-to-box midfielder which is why I thought Dave might have more competition for that "Alonso" role. I think you'd have to play Crofts or someone similar in there with Bridcutt.

To be fair, in our two biggest games of last season he went missing. As did the rest of our Spanish contingent, and I include Ulloa in that.

Very different players. Orlandi's far more skillful, but Lopez puts in consistently excellent crosses. You'll never see Dave ghosting past people like Orlandi can, but his vision is in a different league to anyone at the club.

Plus he takes an excellent spot kick.
Orlandi only ever seems to score screamers/chances where there's no thinking time. You wouldn't want him taking a penalty.

This ia a bit harsh - there has been a few lttle bits from various sources indicating the Lopez may leave. Maybe he wants to stay but on an improved contract ? it does appear that once we make a contract offer to players it is take it or leave it. Bridge was willing to stay as well bbut we would not match his wage demands (which were not extortionate).

Not the case Adam El Abd was offered a year and then got two so there must be some leeway.

I wonder whether Lewis Dunk could be converted into a midfield player. I believe he was given a short run out at Whitehawk protecting the back four.

Might be a decent move. Good on the ball, reads the game well, athletic but his occasional lapse in concentration would not be so important.

Possibly a decent back up option if Bridcutt gets injured. A sub who could cover more than one position.

Under Poyet I felt we had too many midfield players on decent wages when perhaps other clubs are more happy to have less high profile players as back up.

That'd only be at home anyway. I'd expect a more cautious line up away from home, with perhaps Barnes for Kaz and Crofts for Orlandi/Lopez/Buckley.
Plus Will can only play around 30 games a season and Kaz gets injured a lot. Assuming we don't bring in a lot more players, I think Dave would be a regular.

From what I've seen of Oscar's tactics, I think you will find that the team will play with Bridcutt and another DM in centre midfield...which is why I think he was looking at Dunky in that holding midfield role on Saturday.

So in effect you have a 4-2-1-3 / 4-2-3-1. This enables the midfield to gamble more and move the ball forward quicker to the wide men, without running the risk of the lone DM (i.e. Bridcutt) being caught out...It also allows teams to not have to rely on dominant or quick centre halves as the two DM's can fill in defensively.

It also allows the wingers FAR more freedom...The reason for this is because, rather than relying on wingers to cover the full backs, your left or right sided DM's do that job for you....

Also, if we do go down this route, then expect to see alot of play next year where the ball is moved quickly from one side of the pitch to the other to counter-attack opposition teams. We have the players capable of doing this and it would suit Orlandi's game as a playmaking central midfielder.

We don't have to have either Orlandi or Dave. We saw so many times last year that it's much more a squad game and I think that both players could play the central role at times. Orlandi has also been effective on the left wing - wasn't he played there in the Blackpool match?

I can understand the reluctance to re-sign Hammond and Upson but I really don't understand why we haven't signed up Lopez.

If we are going to play a more offensive brand of football then the likes of Orlandi, Buckley and Lua Lua will be seeing more of the ball, ergo more free kicks conceded by the opposition, ergo it makes sense to have a dead-ball specialist.

And even if you weren't keen on him as a starter, what a great bench option. Right-back and anywhere across the midfielder, so covers 5 positions.

We finished 4th, so there wasn't a great deal wrong with the squad Gus left behind. What are we waiting for?

Length of contract may not be the sticking point(there may be flexibility there) - more likely wages ! Bridge would have stayed but for 20K - just too expensive for a LB.
