Very moving to read everybody's comments on Twitter, how adored he was by people all over the world, of all different beliefs, people who felt they didn't fit in the world, young old, etc etc. What an immense legacy. I usually like everything in moderation, but sitting back today and will have glued to wall-to-wall Bowie coverage today. RIP. That's it from him, but we will have the songs until we breathe our last.

Just back in the UK first thing this morning from NZ/Oz holiday and his death was the first thing our Taxi Driver told us about.

He was the King of Reinvention and I don't mean that in any derogatory sense at all.

If you listened to his Ziggy Stardust era rock stuff in the early '70's you simply couldn't have imagined the Thin White Duke soul sound nor the industrial Eno collaborations were on there way in the next few years...

He never ever impressed me either as a musician or a person. I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions.

The cliche 'legend' is thrown about far too readily in the modern day, but Bowie is fully deserving of that title. His musical creativity crossed so many boundaries. The man had masses of talent. In the era when he started you had to have talent to succeed and stay successful - unlike the boil in the bag Simon Cowell mass produced dross of the modern era.

Sorry to hear that. You don't know what you're missing.

Felt the urge to play "Heroes" very loud whilst typing this. Remember Mark Radcliffe playing this on his show once and remarking "..that track only got to number 24 in charts, hard to believe there were 23 better songs around that week, in fact hard to imagine that there have been 23 better songs ever".
.

how this never reached no 1 confuses most people to this day

One of my earliest memories is of me and my little brother sitting in the back of the car singing along to 'Rebel, Rebel' but with us being five and three at the time we were singing 'Rabbit, Rabbit'.

My parents don't listen to a lot of music; if the deck was spinning it was invariably Queen, Elton John or David Bowie. To say that his music informed my musical tastes from a young age would be an understatement.

A massive, massive loss.

I'm off to listen to 'Low' and try to get some work done.

That David Bowie. Absolutely no talent. He couldn't write or sing a decent song which have stood the test of time could he? Nor could he play any instruments. Well known for always jumping on the band wagon and copying everyone. No originality or innovation in both his songs and look. Deeply disliked within the industry and global music fans alike. And to cap it all, was a really uncool, ugly looking man. Yeah, when you think of the words unimpressive, its always David Bowie who pops into mind.

I feel a bit of pity for you that you felt that much of a need to be a CJTC to come onto this thread and post that. What a miserable existence you must lead.

It's going to sound odd, but last night I watched the Prestige, with DB playing Nikola Tesla. And I couldn't help thinking that he just seemed perfect in the role. His music will live on and I'll be having a bit of a Bowie fest this afternoon. RIP

I can remember distinctly being mildly irritated when, in my first year at University (1972/73) all my friends were going over the top about Ziggy Stardust. I was in to different kinds of music, and still am.

BUT

I have loved a great deal of what he has done since, have been impressed with the reviews of his new album, which I shall be ordering as soon as I have finished this, because it sounds so interesting, and have always thought he showed immense creativity and talent. he always came over as interesting and a decent man when interviewed.

He was at the top of the tree for some 45 years, but never by doing the "same old same old" all the time. As said by others on here, the words icon and legend are grossly overused these days, but he has been genuinely one of the most innovative and influential figures in music in the last half-century.
